U S marshals removed a hard core group from Pentagon grounds after a weekend rally near the five sided building. Organizers called it the birth of a new peace movement as thousands joined the march with hundreds arrested and dozens injured. Dave Dellinger warned that opposition has moved from dissent to resistance.
After a weekend of protests at the Pentagon, 240 protesters were detained at Occoquan and 439 arrested overall. Authorities reported 13 marshals, 10 soldiers, and 24 civilians injured. troops used tear gas, though officials denied dispersal by gas. Demonstrators held teach-ins for MPs, with 800 present Sunday afternoon shrinking to about 300 by nightfall.
Tens of thousands joined peaceful parades in the New York metropolitan area and Newark to back U S troops in Vietnam. Numbers included about 60 000 in Newark and 100 000 in New York and Long Island combined, with Waterbury and other cities also hosting large groups.
The City Commission meets at 2 p.m. Tuesday in City Hall. The public is welcome.
Six youths were injured in a one car crash on the Kansas Turnpike about 11 miles west of the West Lawrence interchange. Judy Stobbelaar, 19, of Lakewood Colorado, drove eastbound and lost control rolling the auto at least twice. Sister Bobbie 17 and Leonard Simmons 18 of Denver were in serious condition with head injuries at Stormont Vail Hospital.
The Lawrence High School music department presents its annual Fall Concert at 7 30 p m Thursday in the school gym admission is free.
Lawrence residents enjoyed the first Kansas University Fall Festival with a derby, square dance, booths, and crowd participation. Derby winners included Masoud Moayer and others. traffic rose as Douglas County licenses increased from 24 585 to 25 759 vehicles.
Owen C. Carl 78 of 1503 Stratford Rd died Sunday morning. A retired clothier who opened Carl's Clothiers at 905 Mass. St in 1913, the store later became Weavers Men's Store in 1962. Survived by wife Elsa two daughters a son ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Graveside services held at Oak Hill Cemetery Rumsey Funeral Home in charge. The family requests no flowers.
City officials announced there will be no town hall meeting this week. The next session is set for 8 p m on Oct 31 at West Junior High School 2705 Yale Rd.
About 5 000 people attended the 10th annual Maple Leaf Festival in Baldwin over the weekend. Maple Leaf Queen Kathy Kapelle led parades with Baker University homecoming candidates and local groups. Winners included Baldwin Mothers Club first in float contest, with Rebekah Lodge and Explorer Scouts second and third.
LMH reports average daily census in September was 110.34, 15 above August but under the year to date average. October figures show rebound from August and September lows.
Monte Moore resigns from play by play duties for the Kansas City Athletics on KCMO radio and TV. He will join the Oakland Athletics in a public relations role, officials said.

About 300 persons attended a Sunday open house at Sigma Nu fraternity 945 Emery Rd. KU Chancellor and Mrs Wes coe and Donald Alderson with Emily Taylor toured the 6500 square foot addition including sleeping dormitory recreation area and study hall. A new air conditioning heating system furnishings kitchen were added to the house built in 1907 and acquired in 1922.
