U.S. sets six month trigger to lift Bosnia arms embargo

Secretary of State Warren Christopher said the United States will propose automatically lifting the U.N. arms embargo against Bosnia if no war settlement is reached in six months. President Clinton warned the U.S. will not act alone and peacekeepers are not to be replaced if allied forces quit. Diplomatic hurdles loom as Security Council members hesitate and a veto is possible. The Muslim-led government backs the US Britain France Germany and Russia plan, while Bosnian Serbs reject it and would cede about a third of captured territory.

Abu Nidal operatives receive light sentences

In St Louis three members of the Abu Nidal organization who faced up to 20 years for planning terrorist acts were sentenced to 21 months by U S District Judge Donald Stohr. The ruling drew protests from Jewish groups and surprised the defendants who smiled and waved to family in court.
