E R Zook secretary of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce was sworn Monday as a member of the Federal Grand Jury in Topeka. Judge Hill instructed the panel and about 70 cases were to be presented. Foreman Lakin Meade and deputy Angelo C Scott named.
Senators Mansfield and Humphrey pressed for faster U.S. missile and science programs as Sputnik orbited at 18,000 mph. Clarence B. Randall said a satellite could have been launched with ICBM gear, while Vanguard preparations at Cape Canaveral faced repeated postponements. Humphrey criticized the Eisenhower administration for perceived delays and called for an explanation.

In London the Privy Council refused to overturn Muhandi's death sentence for the murder of a 9 year old girl in Tanganyika. Prosecutors said Muhandi employed a lion man to kill, and two elderly women also face death. The execution date will be set by a court in Dar es Salaam.
London reports that a secret experiment with H-bomb material is blamed for a radioactive dust release at Windscale in northwest England. The Oct. 10 incident sent dust from a chimney at the Calder Hall facility, prompting milk condemnation from 700 farms within 200 square miles. Government says cattle are not permanently harmed.
Porterville State Hospital in California reports nine deaths from influenza among mentally retarded patients over the past week and a half. Superintendent Dr. James T. Shelton said efforts to obtain care have been fruitless since mid September and the flu incidence appears to be past its peak. The patient total fell from 822 ill on October 12 to 175 yesterday.
AP reports the U S aircraft sector may shed about 100000 additional workers as defense program cutbacks reduce procurement of planes missiles ships and guns. Some plants including Sunflower Ordnance and Ravenna Arsenal have already reduced staff while others face shutdowns and standby operations.
In Brooklyn federal court sergeant Roy A. Rhodes testified that he betrayed the United States and fed information to Soviet nationals after a Moscow hotel party with two Russian girls. He said he was paid in rubles and that his actions related to the espionage trial of Col Rudolf Abel, the alleged Soviet master spy.
The Astronomical Institute of Bern University announced the discovery of a new comet named Wild Comet by Paul Wild of Bern. Sighted last Friday night, the object travels southeastward about 6,210,000 miles from Earth and will soon fade from the Northern Hemisphere view but remain binocularly visible from the Southern Hemisphere for a few nights.

The cooperative supplies 1 700 local members across nine states.
Burglars entered the Hillview Garden Center located south of Lawrence along U.S. Highway 58 early Monday night. Nothing appeared to be taken, and the building was thoroughly ransacked. Police are investigating the break in at the Sarden Center area.

Former Kansas University Mining Engineering head C. M. Young and his wife were killed October 4 in a collision near their Hiram Ohio home. Young taught at KU 1906-14 and 1919-46 retiring to Ohio where he had graduated from Hiram College. Their son Clinton J. also earned a KU degree.
