New York detectives say Helen Pelrose a 24 year old laundry sorter in Jersey City confessed she was the lure in a Boston blackmail ring that extorted about 60 000 from Albert Searles and more than 600 000 in other plots. Police say she used multiple aliases including Eleanor Barness and Sheila Barton and faces extradition to Boston on four indictments.

Harold T. Chase chief editorial writer of the Topeka Daily Capital opened a lecture series for the University of Kansas journalism department. Kansas editors including Henry J. Freezing temperatures were logged across Wisconsin Illinois and Michigan with frost from the upper Mississippi valley eastward. Wausau Wisconsin recorded 26 at 5 am and Chicago 47 at 7 am while Cairo topped 48. Frosts were widespread in the region with minimums as low as 14 at White River Ontario. In San Bernardino mountains a man identified as Kelly, missing since Saturday, was found dead at the foot of a precipice near a state highway. His wife survived with injuries and Meredith Waterbury, 45, also lived after exposure and thirst. Mrs Nelty sustained a gashed arm while saving a child.
In Lawrence, Marion Lawrence, a University of Kansas student and Lawrence High graduate, won the city’s Miss Lawrence title in a slim ballot contest. Seventy-five ballots were cast with Miss Lawrence garnering 34 votes, followed by Meta Murphy with 3. Several ballots arrived late and were not counted. The mayor praised the choice, noting the city’s representation at Independence festivities.
Ninety new members joined the Lawrence Choral Union at the second high school rehearsal. Dean Swarthout leads a two week drive for enrollment as plans for The Messiah and Verdi Requiem proceed with possible additions.

A Ford owned by H Gale of Baldwin was stolen Sunday afternoon from in front of Patterson hat shop. It was found parked on East Thirteenth Street by police yesterday afternoon. The vehicle was locked with the key missing, and there is no clear indication of where it was during the interim. It was not stripped and was in good condition when found.
