Indicted for Plot to Assassinate Ford in California
Two men, Gary DeLure and Preston Mayo, were indicted for conspiring to kill President Ford in Sacramento on Sept. 5. The plan allegedly included bombing a sewer near the state Capitol as a diversion while Mayo fired on Ford. Both suspects, held in Santa Barbara, faced arraignment set for Oct. 28.

Wheat crop needs rain across Kansas in 1976
Rainfall is badly needed in Kansas as top soil moisture is short in all areas except east central and southeast. Wheat stands are spotty due to dry top soil while subsoil moisture is also scarce except in central and eastern districts. By week’s end 85 percent of intended wheat acreage had been planted in the southwest and south central districts, with only 75 percent complete and much of the seed dusted into dry soil.

Man Arrested After Traffic Stop in Lawrence
