McLouth Citizens Help Widow with Unusual Fund Drive

In McLouth an auction in the city park Saturday and a food sale in the American Legion building raise funds for the Helen Bartlett Fund. Donated items from Lawrence and Oskaloosa merchants support a water system for Mrs Helen Bartlett widow of Vern Bartlett, a local Boy Scout leader who died over three years ago.

John W. Plybon 36 of Hickman Mills Mo died in a Kansas Turnpike crash about 11:50 p m Monday near a bridge seven miles west of West Lawrence Interchange The car struck a semi truck driven by Jack E Tyrrell 35 of Sterling Colo and Plybon was ejected as Donald Fulmer 33 of Kansas City Mo attempted to pass Tyrrell Neither Tyrrell nor Fulmer was injured Plybon’s death followed two earlier Turnpike fatalities in 10 days Funeral services will be in Fulton Mo and the body shipped there by Cooper Warren Mortuary Survivors were not listed.

Diane Lennon youngest of the Lennon Sisters wed Richard E Gas a telephone company splicer in Venice California. The ceremony was assisted by her ten siblings and the Lawrence Welk band with blessing from Pope John XXIII. The 20 year old had already retired from show business.

Anderson Reappointed Talent Coordinator for Project Talent

Dean Kenneth E. Yankees weigh Stengel replacement as Houk emerges

Eisenhower cites 1954 Nixon assignment on highway program

President Eisenhower recalled naming Nixon to outline the federal state highway expansion plan approved by Congress two years later. He noted the new bridge ties into that program while denying political aims for his six state tour. Hagerty said Ike met Republicans in Detroit and spoke against anti American propaganda without targeting any group.

Ed Howard of Lawrence Public Libraries was elected president at the Kansas Library Association three day convention in Hutchinson. He succeeds Miss Oneita Johnson of Pratt and is joined by new vice president Horace Moses of Topeka. About 380 attendees heard Howard, who has led the local program since August 1959 after two years in Topeka.

Lawrence crafts program opens registrations at Community Building

The Lawrence Recreation Commission offers a Saturday morning crafts program for grades 3 through 9 with 9 30 a m registration. Classes begin October 29 at 9 30 a m and cover weaving ceramics copper enameling drawing and painting and playground crafts. Registration fee is 1 dollar.

George Byers an assistant professor at Kansas University will speak at the U S Navy Research Reserve meeting at 730 pm in the Military Science building on campus He is a captain in the Medical Service Corps and will report on the International Entomological Conference held in Europe last summer The public is welcome.

Spiegel Listed in Good Condition After Shoulder Surgery

Dale Spiegel, Em­poria, Democratic nominee for state attorney general, is reported in good condition after surgery to repair a broken shoulder from a Kansas Turnpike crash near Wichita Saturday. His wife Mrs Spiegel died in the same accident. Funeral set for Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church Emporia with burial Maplewood Cemetery. John Montgomery says aides will campaign to support Spiegel while he recovers.
