Cotton Becomes More Appealing to Kansas Farmers

Kansas farmers increasingly turn to cotton over wheat, corn, or sorghum as a drought-tolerant alternative. McManus notes dryland cotton nets three times more than dryland wheat for some, with some fields yielding 300 pounds per acre. Gins in Moscow, Winfield, Anthony, and Blackwell process much of the cotton, and a new Pratt gin will open as a fourth in-state facility. A $5 million Liberal warehouse expansion supports the growth, though hail and the cost of new equipment pose risks. Local officials say cotton boosts the economy and creates jobs, while skeptics warn it requires intensive management and may deter some farmers.

Derailment Damages Homes in Pico Rivera Causing Evacuations

A freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed in Pico Rivera California early Saturday injuring none seriously and prompting evacuation of more than 200 residents. About 500 gallons of diesel spilled and two homes sustained severe damage while several others received debris. Investigators seek the specific hazardous contents and any leaks. Local residents described smoke and a chemical odor with one pregnant resident worried for her fetus. The derailment was Union Pacific's second in the LA area in two years.
