Parks projects face delays amid criticism in Lawrence

Lawrence parks director Fred DeVictor says limited staffing has slowed improvements at Deerfield Park with over 25 000 dollars spent on paving landscaping and equipment. Youths win prizes in Journal World Football Contest

Patty Reed wins first prize a 15 pound turkey for accurately guessing Kansas and Colorado outcomes. Tim Wenger and Chris Runyan share second prize 10 pound birds for close Kansas Colorado score guesses. KU tied CU 1 to all and winners were nearer final totals than other entrants.

Burn accident leaves teen burned in Lawrence garage

George R Polasek 15 suffered burns to both legs in a Sunday fire at his family home in Lawrence. He was admitted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital in fair condition after the garage fire caused about 4000 in damage. Investigators believe gas fumes from a furnace ignited nearby wood and boxes as the boy spilled gasoline while moving a gas can. Police and fire officials say damage was confined largely to the garage. A KU student was listed in excellent condition at Watkins Memorial Hospital after an overdose, with authorities not releasing her identity.
