Hanchin Describes Viet Nam Policy On U S Aid
Col Ralph Hanchin told Lawrence Rotarians that South Viet Nam welcomes American equipment and advisers but rejects direct U S troop involvement. He said South Viet Nam leaders want outsiders limited to support roles and predicted Gen Maxwell Taylor would share this view. Hanchin noted helicopter pilots could aid without fighting, and said the U S would continue to supply military advisers and gear as Vietnam self equips.

Kansas University football fans traveling to Norman to see the Jayhawks vs. Sooners can follow four lane highways most of the way. Maps at Kansas Turnpike Interchanges show routes with 280 to 315 miles of fast travel on Turnpike and Interstate 35. Completion of a 50 mile link and a new 4 lane segment near Oklahoma City shorten the drive to under six hours with a 65 mph speed limit.

Chancellor’s quick aid helps save KU parent at game
Birchell Hayes of Galena suffered chest pains during the KU Iowa State football game. Chancellor Clarke Wescoe stopped to check him, diagnosed an attack, and arranged rapid transport to Watkins Hospital where a staff physician continued care. Hayes is recovering. his daughter Judith and son John attend KU.

Lawrence Planning Commission adopts sidewalk policy and nurseries rules
The Lawrence Planning Commission approved a sidewalk policy requiring sidewalks in nearly all new developments to boost safety for school pedestrians. It also moved day nurseries into zoning section 13 enabling Board of Zoning Appeals rulings to be appealable to the City Commission and adjusted meeting dates to the first and third Wednesdays starting December 1.

Prof Grinstead Hurt In Two Car Accident
Frances D Grinstead an associate professor of journalism at Kansas University route 4 suffered minor injuries in a two car crash at University Place and Engel Road Monday afternoon. She complained of stomach pains and had a small knee cut but required no treatment. Damage to the vehicles was about 465 dollars. The second driver John T Hood 21 of 1404 Alumni Pl was not hurt.

The aircraft carrier Randolph and Liberian tanker American Viscountess collided 325 miles east of Charleston. No serious injuries. the carrier suffered a 30 foot gash and a gasoline line rupture causing a brief fire. Firefighters sustained minor injuries per naval spokesman.

Eisenhower denies role in Yugoslav jet sale
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower told a Newark news conference he had nothing to do with the sale of 135 Sabre Jet fighters to Communist Yugoslavia. He said the military had the planes available in January and the State Department approved the sale after Kennedy took office in January. The agreement with Yugoslavia was made in March. He noted 1958 policy allowed cash sales of military equipment while diplomatic relations remained equal.
