Chicago report notes heightened protection for packing houses with cot-filled town hall dormitories, telegraph alerts, round-the-clock watch, and patrols. Boycott widened to make Pinkerton men unable to buy goods in the area amid labor unrest.
Reports detail widespread damage from a fierce storm around Oct 15 with seven foot six inch lake level rise on Lake St Clair. Docks and structures on both shores suffered, canals flooded, and several vessels driven ashore or damaged, including the tug Me Rose and the sloop Turk.
Reports from Sabine Pass and Johnsons Bayou describe a flood disaster with eighty five drowned and many survivors in distress. Relief efforts include $3,000 raised, clothing and food distributed, and ships delivering aid as crews estimate up to $100,000 needed for winter. First assistant postmaster general A E Stevenson submitted the annual post office operations report for the year ended June 30. It shows 31,492 offices established and 1,120 discontinued, net increase 2,352, total offices 53,614. Top states by offices include Pennsylvania New York Ohio Virginia Illinois and Missouri. Money orders totaled 7,326 with Illinois leading. General Stevenson again urges government payment of third class office rents.
