Lawrence High debaters win three trophies in two weddings

Lawrence High School debaters seized three trophies this weekend at Wichita North High and Emporia Roosevelt High School tournaments. Two LHS teams claimed first and second in Wichita, with Hill and Backus finishing first and Gilles and Pease second. DeCoster and Gentry took second in Emporia, while Kneisley and Pine were undefeated but missed third due to a single trophy per school.

Browning Undergoes Surgery After Fatal Eudora Crash

Arthur M. D. Browning Jr 21 a KU education senior survived Saturday crash one mile east of Eudora. He underwent surgery at Kansas City Kansas University Medical Center for a fractured jaw and was listed in fairly good condition. Fellow survivor Robert H Whitson 23 was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Mrs Norma J Parks 26 and Mrs Linda Sturgeon 21 died in the crash. Funeral services for Parks set for Tuesday at Rumsey Funeral Home. Sturgeon services pending.

West German authorities arrest four people on spying charges for the Soviet Union. Leonore Suetterlin hanged herself in Cologne prison. The group is said to have supplied high grade secrets from Bonn Foreign Ministry and the French Embassy in Bonn to Soviet contacts via East and West Berlin.

Loss figures in KU weekend traffic incidents

Damage totaling 250 dollars accompanied three KU incidents on a weekend. A Leavenworth man and a Hastings man sustained 50 and 100 dollars in vehicle damage after a Naismith Drive collision near Allen Fieldhouse. A trucker from Haskell overturned and was treated. County Agency Retains Local Accounting Firm

The Douglas County Commissioners approved a contract with Lesh Bradley and Barrand of Lawrence for auditing county books for 1967 at a cost not to exceed 4000 dollars and a continuous monthly audit of County Court records for 50 dollars. They also denied Sheriff Rex Johnson's request to pay deputies overtime for directing traffic at Kansas University football games.

Civil Air Patrol Group Attends Omaha Meet

Four Civil Air Patrol members from the Lawrence Optimist Squadron traveled to Omaha for a regional planning conference with CAP reps from seven north central states. The event, led by Gen. William Wilcox and Richard Murphy, included a two day session and site visits to Offutt Air Force Base. Kansas Wing CAP accepted a regional award for best search and rescue operations, received by Wing Commander Noel Depew.

City officials reminded residents that burning trash is banned at the new sanitary landfill one mile west of Lawrence, south of U S Highway 40, with violators facing prosecution. Public Works Director George Williams said the old 8th Street dump is closed and signs point to the new site.

KU Debaters Sweep Weekend Tournaments
