East Berliners Jump From Window As Police Fire Tear Gas

In Berlin today five East Berliners leapt from a second story window of a border house into a sand filled truck near BerMauerstrasse as West Berlin crowds cheered. East German police fired tear gas into the onlookers after the jumpers escaped into the truck. Two West Berlin women were injured mildly.

Western Big Four Berlin talks trimmed to Washington route

The State Department said Western Big Four Berlin talks will stay in Washington with U S Ambassador to Moscow Lewellyn Thompson remaining in the capital for consultation. France blocked high level talks arguing it was premature before Moscow shows willingness to negotiate.

Ford Resumes Half of Plants After Major Strike

Ford Motor Co. restarts production at roughly eight of sixteen assembly plants following a 13 day UAW strike. An insurgent tool and die unit at Rouge in Dearborn defied back to work orders and pressed for job security. UAW leader Reuther called demonstrations insignificant while confirming Ford will consult on subcontracting. Executive Board ordered local unions to end strikes at all but two plants as talks continue. Ford aims for full operation by Wednesday.

Cuban refugees reach Miami after sea rescue

Forty five Cuban refugees including 18 children arrived in Miami after a Coast Guard rescue near Cay Sal in the Bahamas. A U S destroyer stood by while authorities questioned 21 men detained for questioning. Bahamas governor said shots were exchanged between two Cuban fishing boats offshore.

Atlas Missiles Near Topeka Base Cleared for SAC Use

Nine Atlas missile launch complexes near Forbes Air Force Base are turned over to the Strategic Air Command. The Worden site, 14 miles from Lawrence, houses a 100 acre complex with a 5 325 mile range and 17 250 mph speed. Series E ICBMs use all inertial guidance and are stored partially underground for protection.

Train Planned for Baldwin Tour During Maple Leaf Festival

A special train runs between Lawrence and Baldwin Sunday October 22 to view Vinland Valley. Maple Leaf officials urge ticket sales by Tuesday evening for reservation. Tickets 1.75 adults 1.50 children round trip. departs Lawrence 12 30 and 3 30 returns 2 50 and 5 40. Baldwin departs 2 00 and 4 50. Attractions include free bus rides barbecue stands antique auto display and a 3 30 baby show. Maple Leaf Festival opened Saturday with queen Janet Hornberger crowned.

Post Card Angers Nigerians as Peace Corps Gets First Black Eye

In Ibadan Nigeria a misaddressed postcard by Peace Corps volunteer Margery Michelmore sparked a campus protest with about 1 000 students demanding expulsion over alleged primitive living conditions. GUF Targets 15000 Donors For KU This Year
