Report details a perilous airship accident near the Graf Zeppelin as it endured a violent storm. Crew and passengers faced danger while repairs and securing the craft continued. The United States naval base hosted the airship after its long flight, with spectators watching the docking and officials enforcing safety rules to prevent hazards from the immense hydrogen filled vessel.
A German Zeppelin crew, led by Lieut Commander Charles E. Rosendahl, arrived in New York after a stormy voyage. Passengers rested aboard a special train to Battery Park for a city reception. The Graf Zeppelin, built largely by subscriptions, had been leased to a Spanish company with an option to buy.
An interview with Albert Gradsingki, Prussian interior minister and Zeppelin passenger, accuses American police at Lakehurst of rough handling. He says such actions would have led to immediate firing in Prussia and cites passengers being pushed and one being struck. The German consul general Lewinsky was among those affected.
The Graf Zeppelin crew and passengers received a hero’s welcome in New York on October 16 as they arrived by airship showered with confetti and ticker tape. They rode in automobiles to city hall where Acting Mayor McKee led formal greetings, with Dr Hugo Kickner and the German ambassador to speak by radio. The dirigible’s crew then departed from Jersey shore aboard the Lakehurst train and were ferried ashore by the Mackon, entering the city’s triumphal parade route.
Judge W L Huggins of Emporia was chosen president at the Kansas State Historical Society meeting in Topeka. W G Simons of Lawrence was elected first vice president and Charles M Harger of Abilene second vice president. William O Connelley of Topeka was secretary and Mrs Mary Embree of Topeka treasurer, both reelected. In Chicago, a separate note says the government began a new testing of 1927 radio nets with a suit to bar WMBB WOR from resuming broadcasts in defiance of federal order.
Weather outlook says mostly fair skies tonight and Wednesday with cooler temperatures and possible frost in western and northern areas. Roads vary from clear to muddy with Ottawa Topeka and Pittsburg noted as partly cloudy or cloudy services. A 13 year old Bernard Ricker found a large sack of mail dropped from the Graf Zeppelin as it passed over Washington yesterday. None of the mail was addressed to Washington. City Postmaster C P Mooney forwarded it. Authorities believe the bag was dropped here by mistake and it fell on a school ground.
In Manila University of the Philippines, bachelors’ lads who violated a school rule by skipping a literary program were sentenced by the faculty to stage a 2 hour dramatic performance and receive a public reprimand. An unrelated line notes an apple weighing one pound three ounces brought from Hiltons, Bristol, Tenn.
In Petersburg Virginia October 16 AP Curtis Republican vice presidential nominee addressed locals criticizing Governor Alfred E Smith on prohibition and immigration. He questioned enforcement of the New York law and spoke at the Petersbury Grays armory before touring battlefield sites with civic leaders. He planned to North Carolina next, part of a broader final pre election push.
Eugene Graves a former Kansas Wesleyan University athlete was jailed in Salina on a twelve count blackmail charge. He allegedly demanded money from two physicians under threat of death after sending a series of letters in May and June. Investigators said handwriting matched Graves and that a third package with $700 was hidden in Oakdale Park.

Rain delays on U S 73 W south of Lawrence push the final concrete slab completion into late this week or early next week. In Franklin county the slab finished Sunday, while Douglas county remains hampered by wet weather and rock shortages. Engineer Trueblood says four to five days remain if rock and weather cooperate, with the cross state road near Ottawa nearing a public celebration date.

A 1 year old boy named Baby Winford Brown shot his mother, Mrs Roy Brown, in their home while she slept, causing instant death.
