Melvern experiment a decade long fishery success story
A joint venture among Kansas fishermen biologists and the Corps of Engineers at Melvern grew from 1989 to 1999 expanding walleye stocking and lowering fish loss. Walleye catches rose to about 5000 annually as seven inch fry were raised in a Corps pond and later stocked by the Junction City hatchery. Jirak now shifts to bass stocking aiming for 15000 twelve ounce bass and shoreline plantings.

Peacock bass takes Florida waters by storm in canal fisheries
The exotic butterfly peacock bass thrives in South Florida canals from Homestead to Pompano Beach. Since 1984 stocking by Paul Shafland, the species has boosted sport fishing, controlling tilapia and Mayan cichlids without harming natives. Recent catches include a 15-pounder in Davie and a 12 pound 9 ounce record in Venezuela, signaling rising world records in all tackle sport fishing.
