Man accused of knife threat thwarted by coworkers

A 24 year old Lawrence man Marcus Antonio Phillips was charged with aggravated battery a level four felony and sought on a Jackson County warrant after a Monday stabbing in the 100 block of North Michigan Street. The victim, 47, arrived at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with serious injuries and was later transferred to a Kansas City area hospital. Phillips is jailed on 50000 bond with no contact orders and next court appearance set for Thursday.

Firefighters Die In Kansas City Building Collapse
Two longtime Kansas City firefighters were killed when a burning building collapsed on Monday evening. Fire Chief Paul Berardi identified the victims as Larry Leggio, 43, a 17 year veteran, and John Mesh, 39, with 13 years service. Two other firefighters were injured. Building owner Bo Tran said the cause of the fire was not yet known. A wall collapsed outward about 30 feet, trapping the four responders who had been protecting a nearby grocery store. Westar Energy to cut about 40 positions across Lawrence Tecumseh and Hutchinson as aging plants wind down. The EPA Clean Power Plan pressures plants to retire old equipment. workers may be offered other positions.
