Vatican reaffirms communion ban for remarried Catholics

The Vatican issued a letter reaffirming that Roman Catholics who divorce and remarry cannot receive Holy Communion unless they obtain an annulment or abstain from sexual relations with their new partner. Cardinal Ratzinger’s nine page note names two cases for communion, warns against conscience as final authority, and stresses indissolubility of marriage amid rising remarriage in the United States.
