Lawrence earns 18 finalists status in the 23rd All-American Cities Award competition for community betterment through citizen action. National Municipal League will select winners after jury review. a November Atlanta visit by locals will present their case.
Chamber of Commerce and city officials praise Lawrence for reaching the All American City finals. Leaders say the honor boosts community pride, spurs problem solving, and highlights local achievements while urging continued efforts toward growth and improvement.
Former President Lyndon B. Johnson surprised attendees by delivering a five minute eulogy at the Eisenhower Museum rededication in Abilene Kansas on the birth anniversary of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Johnson credited him with competence fairness and patriotism as Mrs Eisenhower praised his heritage.
Miami based AP report says a commando group in two boats attacked a small fishing village on Cuba's northeast coast killing at least two and injuring four. Havana radio blamed the United States and its accomplices. The assault used heavy and middle caliber weapons and the attackers departed north. Villagers and army patrols fired back with no landing attempt detected.
Kansas Attorney General Vern Miller states residence for voting or census depends on the individual's intent, applying to ages 18 to 21 as well as those over 21. He cites a 1954 opinion and notes the shift from a paternal residence rule to personal intent governs student voters.

Dr. Earl W. Sutherland Jr. of Vanderbilt University earns the 1971 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries on hormone action and cyclic AMP. The 54 year old scientist, a Burlingame native, will travel to Stockholm in December to accept the award and $88,000 tax free.
The United Fund kickoff starts at 7:30 p.m. on a flatbed truck in front of the First National Bank at Ninth and Massachusetts. KU Pom Pon Girls, Paul Gray and the Gaslite Gang perform. KU Coach Don Fambrough and wife attend as celebrity guests. The campaign aims for $150,055 to support 15 agencies, ending October 29.
Arthur Joseph Byers aged nine was fatally struck by two large tree limbs while walking to school in Kansas City Kansas. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Samuel Byers and died en route to Providence Hospital.
