City readies 1500 smart meters in Lawrence rollout
Lawrence city officials announced Westar will install 1500 smart electric meters in January as part of a 40 million program funded partly by a $19 million federal stimulus grant. The meters will let residents track daily and hourly energy use, carbon footprints, and receive alerts when bills rise. Lawrence will be first in Kansas to test the system, with 45,000 meters planned by late 2011.
