The Gerald and Mary Richter family, first Lawrence Habitat for Humanity homeowners, describe the build effort and 300 hours of sweat equity. Since moving in December 1989, they have improved the 2705 Harper residence, paid no interest on the loan, and invested in lawn care, a storage shed, and ongoing decorating as they raise daughters Leanna and Missy.

Suspect recaptured after jail escape in Lawrence
A 32 year old Kansas City man fled the Douglas County Jail during a shift change and was recaptured at Ith and Rhode Island streets. He was booked into jail at 4 12 p m. Police say he stole a car and faces additional escaping charges. Sheriff Loren Anderson noted no inmate has technically escaped the jail. Authorities say officers briefly searched with two agencies involved.
