A U S estimates a sixth week lull in Vietnam fighting will persist until the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese prepare their winter spring campaign. The 3rd Military Corps Zone assessment notes light enemy activity and reorganization while awaiting political developments and potential November offensives.
Mr. and Mrs. Dolph C. Simons Jr. dined at the White House Sunday evening with President Nixon. The gathering included other Associated Press directors and their wives, plus Cabinet members and spouses. Simons is publisher of the Journal World.
The Kansas Diocese reports a 5000 grant from the executive council to the Kansas Legal Defense Fund for Leonard Harrison of Lawrence and three others convicted of first degree robbery in Wichita. The appeal to the Kansas Supreme Court follows their may conviction for robbing a Kansas City War on Poverty official.
Edward Lira Sr cried over his son Edward Jr. 21 shot and killed by accident when Lira fired a rifle in darkness amid neighborhood gang threats. Companion Steven Rodriguez, 22, was wounded. No arrest was made.
Vinland’s Old Country Store has reopened as Vinland Mart under Grace Suydam. The 100 year old building on Vinland's main street, once a hotel and later a post office, blends rustic interiors with antiques and local goods. Hours are 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday. heating will be added later and the shop will close between Thanksgiving and Easter.
Lawrence groups plan a morning breakfast at First Christian Church and an 8 to 10 pm town meeting at South Junior High School in a Wednesday Vietnam War moratorium. Speakers include James V. Owens and KU officials. literature distribution also planned downtown.
Frank Lesley Barnes 18 of Route 1 held in Douglas County jail on car theft charges. He allegedly took a car owned by Ann Seele from the Kroger Supermarket lot and drove to Eudora before abandoning it. Owner recuperar around 10 p.m. Saturday. Barnes to appear in county court for arraignment. Peter M. Lambertus 19 of Topeka posted 1500 bond for November district court term on marijuana possession charges.
Danny R. Jennings of Eudora remains in poor condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after head injuries from a car overturn near Eudora on October 4. Pamela Crady of Baldwin is under observation at the same hospital for possible injuries from a wooden bleacher collapse at the Baldwin Eudora game. Beverly Kahl of Baldwin was dismissed after treatment for injuries from the same accident.
Evangelist Billy Graham says older people are responsible for the problems facing youth, including pornography and drugs, while speaking to about 30,000 at San Diego Stadium. He asserts the young are the victims, not the fault of the younger generation.

Kansas University police search for C P Snow after a bronze bust of the man for whom Snow Hall is named was taken from its pedestal Sunday afternoon. A professor reported the vandalism and police have not provided an item value.
Local law enforcement reported the Memorial Stadium crowd of 51 000 created minimal bottlenecks. Pre game slowdowns occurred on Mississippi Street and the Kansas Turnpike toll plaza. Police credited 75 officers and interagency cooperation for a mostly smooth, high volume flow.
