Two 16 year olds charged in rail incident
Two 16 year old Lawrence boys pleaded innocent in County Court to taking property without intent to deprive. Their trial set for 2 p m Friday Oct 30. They are free on 1000 dollar bonds. They allegedly commandeered a gasoline powered handcar from Santa Fe Railway yards and wrecked it near Holliday in Johnson County. One youth McCleery injured his leg arm knee and foot when the handcar flew about 100 feet after striking a closed switch. Johnson County planned charges against one, then against the other, but will defer to local authorities for further action since the motorcar was taken in Douglas County. A tape recorder from Kansas University was recovered near the handcar and may involve other school attendees.
