Police report a Saturday night disturbance after the Night Shirt Parade erup ting in South Tark. Students clashed with officers as a Victory Cafe altercation ended with damage and gunfire. Motorman Pendleton and several students were injured while a cafe manager protected his doors amid vandalism and eggs thrown at the front.
At a Chamber of Commerce meeting Joe Schwartz and student leaders learned merchants would aid in orderly celebrations if students helped curb disorder. City authorities led by Chief James H. Monroe pledged cooperation. Schwartz, back on campus after the bonfire, learned riot activity was under way at the Victory Cafe and efforts to quell the disturbance followed.
The local infantry company appoints Captain Paul A. Dinsmore as new commander, succeeding Capt. McKoney who led the first battalion of the Pearth regiment since its formation. Dinsmore previously served as regimental sergeant major and instructor, with ties to Kansas National Guard teams that earned medals in New Jersey. This marks the fourth resignation among the two companies since inception, with several officers citing private affairs during peacetime.
Lawrence Knights of Pythias plan to attend the district convention in Linwood on Wednesday with a business session in the afternoon and a banquet and initiation of fifty candidates that night. Delegates from Lawrence and eastern regions travel by interurban to join the event and a 6 80 banquet is noted. J Gordonich visited Kansas City Sunday.
Tax records show corporations paying $62 982.76 of total taxes with city and county allocations. Cleveland announces three acres beside Liberty Row will be planted with poppy field seed from Flanders. Next summer orphans of soldiers buried among Flanders poppies will harvest the seeds, according to Floyd E Waise, director of parks. A bronze tablet commemorates the garden near Mercier.
The county Y M C A forms a county committee with Ferdyce of Winfield as chair and W F A Kelsey of Reno as vice chair. Charles E Henry to organize Hi Y clubs in Lecompton Winland Linwood and Edora with a Clinton meeting to start a K Y club for boys and Y W C A for girls. A district wide Halloween event is planned and industrial Y M C A work at Bowersock Mills will be supported.
University noon filings show rival tickets for senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman classes. The Status Quo seniors head list with Wint Smith as president and Eileen Van Zandt as secretary. other names include Buford Paseh, W. treasurer, and opposition leaders like Church and Fell for views, with junior, sophomore, and freshman slates led by multiple candidates and managers.
The Douglas County Fair reports prompt payment of premiums with checks available for collection at Poopies State Bank Fair. Exhibits by local merchants and business men were praised as among the best in years though livestock was lacking. The event was free with no admission charge and the fairgoers enjoyed strong exhibits and a positive atmosphere.
In a police court session a man attempted to flee officers during a speeding stop. Officer Jerkins opened fire on tires to stop the pursuit. Byron Brown and Reginald Keppler were fined five dollars plus costs for speeding, while Allen Logan and J. E. Welker faced related charges. Fred Simpson paid a thirty four dollar fine with costs for speeding.
William Zimmerman who was fined for drunkenness months ago in police court, and paroled on good conduct, was found guilty of drunkenness again by Judge C. C. Stewart. His parole was revoked and he paid the fine. School boards will meet at the courthouse Saturday, rural boards included.
Pittsburgh reports show steel mills quiet with some workers returning to jobs as the nation’s strikes ripple. Longshoremen threaten to end a two week impasse while 11,000 Teamsters in New York tie up terminals. Additional reports note railroad yard stoppages and a late stage reopening of three steel plants in Chicago.
