Filmmaker offers fresh view of Ike in Abilene show
Abilene AP. Michigan filmmaker George Colburn premiered highlights from his 90 minute Why Ike Ran about Dwight D. Eisenhower at the Eisenhower Library during the town's 50th anniversary of his election. Colburn, who as a 1960s student saw Ike as a fatherly figure, argues the 1952 campaign was not a foregone conclusion and that conservative Republicans opposed him. He aims to complete the film early next year and hopes public TV airings and Cronkite input will broaden awareness of Eisenhower's presidency while he pursues funding for another project on the 1941-46 era.
