Amish family mourned in Hillsboro fire burial

More than 1,000 mourners gathered at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church to bid farewell to Amish mother Mary Thayer and five of her daughters Justina Theresa Jessamy Dorothea and Bernadine after a farmhouse blaze. Surviving relatives included the father Richard and children Magdalena Matthias Andreas Alexander Paula, with many from 13 states attending. The service featured scripture, hymns, and reflections on faith amid tragedy.

Victims identified in Wichita crash

Bomboardier Aerospace released the identities of the two Wichita men killed when a Challenger 604 jet crashed after takeoff from Mid-Continent Airport. Bryan Irelan, 33, was a test pilot at the controls, and David Riggs, 48, a flight engineer. Eric Fiore, 33, remained in critical condition. NTSB investigators surveyed the scene as emergency crews rescued three men trapped in the burning fuselage. the jet, used for flight testing since 1994, had recently joined service.

Mother of Derrick Thomas sues GM over fatal Suburban crash

The mother of late Kansas City Chiefs star Derrick Thomas filed a civil suit in Jackson County Circuit Court naming General Motors and other defendants. Edith Morgan seeks unspecified damages, alleging defective roof design and failure of air bag deployment, plus negligent ambulance and hospital care after the January 23 crash that left Thomas paralyzed and later died.
