Kennedy Begins Tri State Political Campaign Tour

President Kennedy opened a three state push visiting northern New Jersey leaders and Morgenthau fundraiser. He praised Morgenthau as a strong candidate and drew 40 donors, then met New Jersey and Essex County leaders before Newark Columbus Day events and a Newark City Hall rally with about 10 000 supporters. He planned stops in Pennsylvania and attended a Columbus Day parade.

Regional chairs and assistants named for gifts pledge drive

A gifts pledge is acknowledged and a commemorative plaque will honor all contributors at the stadium. Statewide job training program expands for youths and workers

Employment service officials announce limited funds yet offer training beyond unemployment. The program targets 16 to 19 year olds, workers re entering the labor market, and under employed individuals to address shortages in mechanics and licensed practical nursing with courses starting around February 1. Trainees may receive up to five dollars daily subsistence and up to ten cents per mile for transportation, with costs covered by federal funds.

Escapee Ira Mendell Linked to Adrian Robbery

Ira Mendell a 23 year old Lawrence man who escaped from Hutchinson reformatory with three companions was tied to a Thursday robbery at a home near Adrian Michigan police said. The group stole 111 and fled in a 1962 car after entering Neil Hannewalds parents home with two other fugitives from the reformatory. Otto and Mrs Hannewald were not harmed.

Millionaire's Son Seeks Public School Life at West End High

Cyrus Eaton II, 16, the grandson of a multimillionaire, ran away from Ohio to enroll in West End High School in Nashville. He described himself as Seth French, an orphan seeking ordinary education and a life outside wealth. After meeting officials and staying with a student, authorities confirmed his identity and custody was discussed with his father.

Veteran VFW leader with multiple high level roles

The subject served in Military Intelligence Reserve until 1954 and defended 150 enlisted men in military courts with a win rate under 10 losses. He was the first defense counsel for black market cases in Brussels. His VFW service included Judge Advocate General, post and district commands, California department commander 1956-57, National Council of Administration 1957-59, and presidency of the 60th National VFW convention corporation.

Five children perished when a fire engulfed the three room wooden house of Mr and Mrs Noble Hill in the Missouri Ozark hills. The parents were away in Houston Missouri to seek treatment for injuries the parents had suffered in a fall.

Edwards pilots vie for first space pilot role on X20

An aeronautical engineering graduate from Colorado University in 1958 and Edwards test pilot since 1959 could become the first space pilot to actively control a craft and the first to land an orbiting ship on land. The X20 Dyna-Soar is 35 by 20 by 8 feet, weighs 10,000 pounds, and carries one pilot. Other Edwards pilots vying for the mission include Maj Henry C Gordon Maj James W Wood Capt Albert H Crews Jr and Capt William J Knight. Milton C Thompson of NASA is the sixth test pilot on the project.

Driver Suffers Bruises In Nighttime Crash

Robert F. Moorehead 23 of 2583 Redbed Lane escaped minor bruises after his car overturned on Naismith Road near Sunnyside Avenue at about 1:45 a.m. He was checked and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Moorehead avoided a dark car ahead and swerved, hitting a curb and flipping onto its top. The vehicle owned by Naomi G. Olsen of 1246 Dread Ave. sustained $300 damage.

Fire Run to Mt Oread No Major Vehicle Damage

Lawrence Fire Department responded to a car fire in KU zone X parking lot. Vehicle owned by Estella J Williams of Osawatomie sustained minor damage. Cause undetermined. Williams attends a three day Burglary and Larceny Seminar at KU that ended today.

The legislature passed large measures including trade expansion with tariff adjustment powers, a $1 billion business modernization tax revision, drug regulation, a $435 million retraining program for 1 million jobless workers, and postal rate hikes with federal employee raises. Lawrence FFA Chapter Earns a Silver Plaque

The meats judging team from Jayhawk FFA at Lawrence High School received a silver emblem plaque at a Kansas City breakfast sponsored by the American Royal Association. Thirty-five state teams entered the national contest. Minnesota won first place, while 10 teams earned silver medals including the Lawrence group. Individual silver medals went to James A Baker and David Housworth among others, with Robert Bryant earning gold in individual judging among 23 golds awarded.
