State highway commission announces bids on 195 miles of improvements this month. Celebration honors famed voyager in Genoa parade
In Genoa Italy on October 12 torch bearers carried a silver urn said to hold Christopher Columbus ashes initiating a fifth centennial celebration. Marchers in 15th century dress bore flags of Genoa Pisa Venice and Amalfi while replica ships paraded. The Columbus birth date is uncertain between 1446 and 1451.

The police department will operate from the Community building basement tonight with John Ingalls as acting chief. Radio gear is being moved under Ralph W. Two Alarms Fire Blazes Near Rock Chalk Cafe
Firemen battled a small attic fire above an apartment closet at 61815 West Twelfth Street in the rear of the Rock Chalk cafe building. Chief Paul Ingels reported slight damage after the blaze was extinguished. The incident began around 10:50 a.m. by Station No. 1 from the City Garage station at 445 Mississippi Street, the new quarters since leaving the old Eighth and Kentucky street station around 8 a.m. A second alarm followed at 12:35 p.m. for a brush fire at 900 Haskell Avenue.
