Ballad of Black Jack gains depth for Baldwin festival return

The Ballad of Black Jack by Don Mueller returns for the 14th Maple Leaf Festival in Baldwin with two new characters and songs. The revised production, staged by Baker University, features an 80 cast drawn from Baldwin residents and Baker students, with Mueller now on stage as the governor. Public performances run Friday to Sunday in Rice Auditorium with a Sunday matinee.

Myers to Direct KU School Relations Office

Kansas University launches the Office of School Relations to provide information to high school students and counselors. John A. Myers, former associate director of admissions, will direct the office in the Kansas Union with a small staff and coordination with Alumni and Admissions. The endowment group funds the office for this year.

Murphy earns top prize in Topeka shooting contest

Douglas County Undersheriff Dallas Murphy won the Old Masters trophy and a $25 savings bond at the Kansas Peace Officers Assn 50th anniversary convention in Topeka. He scored 274 of 300 to lead about 130 competitors, the highest among full time law enforcement.

Traffic Jam Follows KU Kansas State Game at Memorial Stadium

Traffic snarl built around Memorial Stadium as a record KU K State crowd of 51 617 filled parking lots and lanes. Police reported few complaints despite towing of about 50 illegally parked cars and a two mile turnpike congestion caused by a minor crash. Buses for both teams arrived late due to the gridlock.

Lawrence lake bluegill surge prompts removal drive

Kansas Forestry Fish and Game Commission reports rapid bluegill and crappie reproduction at Douglas County State Lake near Vinland. Biologists urge removing many small fish to improve growth and fishing, noting most harvestable channel catfish are 78 percent. The 180 acre lake sits north of Baldwin.

Bond Issue Defeated in Kansas Unified School District 365

Voters rejected a $1.7 million bond to build a new high school for Garnett and neighboring communities Gar nett Westphalia Greeley Wel da and surrounding rural areas. The tally was 1,447 against and 740 in favor.

Lawrence police report vandalism at South Junior High School located at 2734 La after 10 p.m. Thursday. Incident was reported at 8 a.m. Friday and today. The event involves property damage at the school.

Funding Board Hears Reports on University Endowment Drive

The Greater University Fund advisory board met Saturday to review the prior year’s fundraising and to plan next year’s drives. County chairs attending will lead upcoming campaigns while Bill Barr and Charles Eldredge discussed private funding’s role in CRINC and the KU Museum of Art.
