Bill Kramer of New Ozawkie won the towns first mayoral election with just under half of the 75 registered voters casting ballots. Thirty two voters participated in the Odd Fellows Hall. Lawrence man acquires Achning Hardware stock
Gene Rosenberry of Route 2 Lawrence has bought the inventory of the Achning Hardware Store at 822 Mass. He opened the store on Monday and will liquidate the entire stock by the end of November. He is not planning future use of the building after liquidation. The store, a Lawrence pioneer, has not operated full time since Ralph Achning died on June 3.

A 1:30 p m Monday ceremony marks the start of a dam on the Little Wakarusa River about 3% miles east of Vinland on the blacktop road. Negro Inmates Fight at San Quentin Prison Yard
About 200 Negro inmates at San Quentin battled in the yard as guards fired eight rifle shots wounding three convicts. Associate Warden James Park said the clash ended in minutes with 42 men questioned and four bruised. The brawl, between Black Muslims and the Low Riders, began over alleged transfers of affiliation and apparently was spontaneous.

The House tentatively approved a surcharge on mass-circulation magazines. Rep. Ken Hechler led a 98 to 50 vote to study the plan as part of the postal rate bill.
