The United States signaled in principle support for partition of Palestine into Jewish and Arab states. The U.S. delegation endorsed the UNSCOP plan and urged Britain to remain to prevent a violent transfer of governance while preparing an international framework for post partition administration.
Rian Jersild will give a recital at the University of Kansas in the Pine Strone hall auditorium at p.m. Monday. The program includes pieces such as Fantasy and Two Preludes by Shetek, with other selections by composers listed in the program.
Arab League ministers discuss possible military action in Palestine with plans to inform Britain, the United States, and the United Nations of Arab troop movements toward the Palestine border. University of Kansas faces an oversupply of housing for all students, with married students in urgent seven days a week search. There are 646 listings for women and few vacancies for men, while many couples and single students share or rent rooms as dorms expand and houses are bought.
Topeka October 11. John E. Burke of Chicago was named legislative fiscal officer by Senator E A Briles as secretary of the legislative budget committee. Burke, a lawyer and finance student with degrees from Indiana University and George Washington University, will earn 4000 dollars.
Weather notes from Topeka predict cooler Sunday across Kansas with a mostly cloudy tonight and tomorrow in the east. New York reports that General Dwight D. Eisenhower could have his name entered in Republican presidential primaries in several states including Wisconsin and possibly New York. Maurice Mumford of the Draft Eisenhower for President league said support grows as he aims for an announcement around January 1. The league, with 000, members in 17 states, seeks cross party backing and may list delegates pledged to Eisenhower by petition if needed.
The mercury climbed into the 80s for the tenth straight October day marking the longest such run in nine years. Ten day mean rose to 73.8 degrees about 17 degrees above normal. October 5 saw a fall high, the season’s highest in Lawrence since 1939. Weather notes warn a killing frost may arrive by midmonth with past patterns showing rapid swings and a frost date around October 15.

At a regular meeting Monday night city officials will hear complaints on nine paving projects financed by special assessments. Projects include alleys on Eighth to Ninth, Tenth to Eleventh, and other blocks plus streets Lyons and Ohio. Also on the agenda are making Tennessee street a northbound one way, annexation extension, and more parking meters in the business district.

If South Dakota State defeats Kansas today, bells atop Cougnin Campanile on Browdings Campus will ring in triumph. Built by Charles Cougnin, the campanile serves as a memorial and timekeeper for the university community and honors those who served in World War II.
Frank T. Stockton dean of the University of Kansas extension was notified today of six appointments to the national panel of the American Arbitration Association. Parties in disputes often seek the AAA to name an arbiter when they cannot agree, and Stockton is now eligible for appointment. He previously served on the Federal War Labor Board in Region 7.
