Barry Goldwater Laments Lack of Debate

Senator Barry Goldwater warned that President Johnson blocks issue framing by refusing to debate. While touring the Pacific Northwest he called for protection of individual freedoms and criticized Johnson’s growth of federal power. He spoke informally in San Francisco with students and planned stops in Spokane Portland and Salt Lake City amid Columbus Day ceremonies.

Baldwin Festival Opens with Queen Coronation in Baldwin

The seventh annual Maple Leaf Festival in Baldwin crowns a queen and two princesses tonight after 18 Baldwin High School seniors compete for the honor. Crowning occurs at 9 p.m. in the Baldwin Grade School multi purpose room with Dale Caruthers of the Baldwin Commercial Club presenting the crown and Ralph Polson as master of ceremonies. A coronation ball follows with Inn Keepers of Topeka providing music at 9:30 p.m. The festival runs Oct 17–18, overlapping Baker University Homecoming on Saturday.
