The Atlas relocation sparks a shift as Houser family and others choose Lawrence over Topeka for settlement. They report warm Chamber of Commerce reception and a promising start, following Du Pont plant executives who migrated to Lawrence, boosting the city’s growth and stirring Topeka resentment.
Rep. Newell A. George of Kansas urged Gov. George Docking as a strong vice presidential candidate on the Democratic ticket in 1960. He spoke to a meeting of First District Young Democrats and endorsed Sen. Jack Kennedy for the presidential nomination.
Barry C. Wright reports three black drums and five cymbals stolen from his parked car at 12th and Oread around 1 p.m. The three fiberglass cases held the gear valued at about $500.
Dr. Harry L. Chambers, 90, died Friday night in Little Rock, Ark. He practiced as a physician in Lawrence for about 60 years and had lived in Little Rock the past two years. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cooper-Warren Chapel with burial in Lecompton Cemetery.
TOPEKA AP Dale Spiegel the governors pardon attorney says he is responsible for the disputed parole of Mrs Anna Mae Borserine The parole was challenged by Atty Gen John Anderson as unlawful Spiegel says he was sold on the idea she was not a criminal and wished to go home to her children Borserine was released last Aug 28 from the Kansas Industrial Farm for Women at Lansing on a parole signed by Gov George Docking Docking said he signs pardons and paroles without studying the case and delegates all responsibility to Spiegel Anderson says Docking cannot evade responsibility for releasing Borserine a Kansas City Mo resident with arrests dating back to 1927 He argues the governor had no authority to parole her.
The Douglas County Unit of the American Cancer Society Kansas Division reports 10000 dressings made and dispensed free to patients from September 1958 to May 1959. Between May and July 1959 over 6000 more dressings were created for convalescent homes and private patients. The unit also sponsors a monthly Surgical Pathological Cancer Clinic with Dr. Jack Hill of Kansas City as pathologist.
Senator Andrey F. Schoeppel of Kansas lauded Republican women at a Johnson County Republican club dinner in Kansas City. He credited them with campaign help and warned that renewed, vigorous organization is needed to reverse GOP losses in recent elections.
Deputy sheriff John Miller reported a shed at the Curtis Dietrich residence in Eudora burned early today about 1 am. The shed was empty and the loss was estimated at 500 to 600 dollars. A nearby barn was threatened briefly before firefighters extinguished the blaze by 2 30 am.
A third major-damage crash involved Elroy S. Parnell and Junius D. Underwood near 19th and Mass Streets. A fourth major crash occurred at 10:57 p.m. on North Second Street near Lincoln Street involving Glenn E. Groninger and Robert Wayne Whitebread as Whitebread tried to pass while Groninger turned.
The Collegiate Council of Kansas Young Democrats plans a 6:30 p m. dinner at the Eldridge Hotel with Dale Spiegel as principal speaker. John Lang chairs about 20 to 30 members amid recent state job dismissals and allegations involving Ralph Ulm. Lang supported Robert Brock, who reversed a stance on Gov. George Docking at a national convention.
Rainy Sunday in Lawrence prompts Christian Rural Overseas Program solicitors to call on residents for donations. Contributions may be mailed to CROP in care of the local postmaster to aid underprivileged families worldwide. A Lawrence American Legion committee donated over $300 for a hospital bed and other sickroom supplies to the Douglas County Welfare Department, led by chairman Harry Brooks with members Bill Boswell and Eben Farley.
Wesley Miller and Robert Dickson were elected presidents of the junior and senior classes at Kansas University Pharmacy School. Junior officers include George Kramer vice president Donald Dyer secretary and Carroll Dolan treasurer. James Palmer a 21 year old bell hop sought in two killings and two shootings was captured at the Gorman Construction Co during a holdup. He tried to force open a safe and flee but was overpowered by 7 workers. Ballistics tie him to prior slayings in Wood River and North St. Louis County.
A truck crash on U S 24 snapped a utility pole in Jefferson County between Lawrence and Perry. Power lines were severed in two spots and a substation transformer was damaged requiring repairs. Electricity returned just before noon Friday.

The Baker University Board of Trustees will hear two gifts totaling 60000 at the Oct 23 meeting. The Filley Memorial Chapel gift of 35000 supports a meditation room near the Quayle Bible collection. A 25000 conditional gift from the Kresge Foundation funds the new library with a 475000 fundraising goal by Dec 1 1961.

Three Kansas City men Maurice Wesson 22 Howard Bryant 17 and Eugene Williams 30 will face extradition next Monday after police recovered two television sets and three hi fi units from their possession. Warrants issued in Douglas County accuse them of burglary and grand larceny for the Tuesday night theft from the B F Goodrich Store at 10th and Vt Streets. The break in occurred late Tuesday night or early Wednesday with an estimated loss of 730 dollars.
