A Douglas County judge found Dustyn Polk, 49, guilty after a two day bench trial of one count of rape, one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, and criminal sodomy involving two girls aged 13 and 15. The crimes date to 2009 with prior accusations over years including a case involving a 10 year old.
Lawrence city commissioners unanimously rezoned about 6 acres near Bob Billings Parkway and Wak orusa Drive from Industrial Business Park to Multi-Dwelling Residential. The two adjacent sites at 5015 Legends Drive and 131 Research Park Drive could host affordable housing for families and seniors with input from the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority.
In southern Kansas ranchers and a conservation bank firm are developing prairie chicken conservation credits to fund habitat restoration. Common Ground Capital sells credits to developers, funds long term habitat plans approved by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and reconnects remaining Lesser Prairie Chickens across scattered grasslands near Ashland and Dodge City. Wayne Walker of the firm notes the effort restores one of the Plains last native grasslands as the population hovers around 26 000 birds.
