Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded for X ray and Neutrino Work
Japanese astrophysicist Riccardo Giacconi and Americans Raymond Davis Jr. with Masatoshi Koshiba split the prize for pioneering cosmic X ray astronomy and neutrino detection. Davis confirmed the sun’s fusion power in early gold mine experiments. Koshiba extended this with Kamiokande, revealing distant supernova neutrinos. Giacconi built the first X ray telescopes guiding black hole and early galaxy studies.

Obesity rates rise as measured surveys show broader reach
A government study finds 31 percent of adults are obese based on actual measurements, up from 19.8 percent who believed themselves obese in 2000. The 1999-2000 survey also reports 15 percent of youths aged 6 to 19 are seriously overweight, about 9 million children, tripling the 1980 figure. Also noted is a museum statue accident and a Ford recall covering 424,164 vehicles due to adjustable pedals.
