Clinton weighs political path in Somalia with Aidid role

President Clinton signaled willingness to let warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid play a political part in Somalia. Officials described a possible offer to halt efforts to arrest Aidid in exchange for him calling off attacks on U S troops as U S forces intensified a political rather than military push. Varying reports from Addis Ababa and Washington noted negotiations led by Robert Oakley with intermediaries Ethiopia and discussions involving Secretary of State Christopher and National Security Adviser Lake. 31 U S servicemen have died in Somalia with five thousand three hundred more U S troops dispatched amid renewed fighting and a recent clash that killed two more.

Haskell weighs admissions changes to curb overcrowding

A faculty panel at Haskell Indian Nations University recommends new admission standards to ease housing strain. The plan would require a 2.0 high school GPA or GED 45, ACT testing, and letters of recommendation for borderline cases. Transfers need a 2.0 GPA. students with more than two suspensions would be barred. The board meets in January to consider the proposal as dormitory capacity is expanded.

U S extends troop support for Haiti mission

The Pentagon plans to bolster a few hundred noncombat U S troops arriving in Haiti to aid a return to democracy. The Harlan County will hover off the coast ready for rescue duties while U S forces train Haitian forces and help build roads clinics and schools ahead of Aristide's October 30 return.
