Cider and doughnuts will be served after the session.
Washington October 9 71 A summary of evidence taken in Kansas last May by a senate campaign investigating committee will be turned over to the main committee tomorrow Senator Reed said but he declared no action would be taken on the report.
The Senate campaigns expenditures committee will investigate a charge that federal relief jobs increased before the November election. Chair man Gillette of Iowa announced the inquiry today.
Washington Oct 9 Senate moves ahead with a plan for three day recesses through November 18 despite protests by Senator Johnson who warned that any pause could spark war. Democratic Leader Barkley argued the scheme protects senators and allows rapid reconvening for emergencies as Republicans signal support for the idea.
Mrs. Nellie Manley and J. T. Constant won prizes for best woman and best man drivers during Safety Week. Manley earned a four grease-job ticket. Constant received an auto seat cushion.
University of Kansas plans a memorial Sunday October 13 for ex Chancellor E H Lindley who died returning from a year abroad. The university choir under D Swarthout will perform as speakers include William Allen White Henry J Allen Roy A Roberts Fred M Harris and Dean Ellis B Stouffer Chancellor Deane W Malott will preside. Ernest K Lindley is expected to attend.
Captain Elliott Roosevelt son of the president reported for duty at Wright Field in the army air corps testing laboratories. He was commissioned September 23 on his 380th birthday and left his private job at Fort Worth Texas to serve in the procurement branch. Fire destroys barn and hay in Columbus Kansas during fire prevention week.
The fire department put out a grass fire in the 1700 block on Alabama Street early this afternoon. No property damage was reported.
Seven local groups including Boy Scouts Girl Reserves Girl Scouts Hi Y Salvation Army Social Service League and T B association plan to participate in the Lawrence Community Chest campaign. Thomas for President club was organized at the University with an executive council. A motion invites members of other political groups and faculty to debates. The next meeting is at 4 30 tomorrow in Memorial Union men's lounge. Freeman Myer chairs with Russell Barrett and Lou Cook as officers.
The Lawrence Junior Chamber of Commerce has rented Holloway's hall at Nineteenth and Massachusetts streets. Regular meetings will be held there on the second Tuesday of each month. The group screened three 15 minute newsreels on radio, horses, and football, and committee chairs reported. Refreshments of doughnuts and cider were served.
Salina Kansas October 9 UPI report says Elliott Roosevelt son of the President faced calls to resign his captaincy in the army air corps. Veterans from Saline County urged the action to aid the universal draft law and sustain morale of the nation’s youth.
Camp Robinson near Little Rock prepares to receive contingents of the 35th National Guard division from Missouri Kansas and Nebraska by Thanksgiving. Construction chief Capt Frank Reed said the camp will be ready to house part of the troops by turkey day with more to come later. Rapid work has continued for weeks at the former World War site.
A large crowd gathered Tuesday afternoon for the dedication of the Black Jack historical marker along US 50 near Baldwin. Speakers included W C Simons editor of the Lawrence Journal World, with remarks on the Battle of Black Jack and a ground-breaking unveiling by Barbara Hays.
Final plans for the Douglas County cornhusking contest require a Friday 7 PM meeting at Eudora city hall. The event is scheduled for Monday October 14 at 10 30 AM on the Dr F G Hagenbuch farm east of Eudora with six entrants including county champion Otto Boerkircher Richland.
President Roosevelt signed excess profits and defense encouragement legislation at 11 p m to curb profiteering and boost defense plants. The act imposes a 25 to 50 percent excess profits tax and 20.9 to 24 percent corporate income tax from 1940 onward, with 20 percent annual depreciation allowances for defense facilities over five years. It also suspends certain warship and aircraft profit limits and provides government life insurance up to 10 000 for military personnel and draftees.
The Kansas Medical Society recommended Dr. R. H. Edmiston as examining physician and John J. Riling as government appeal agent for the Douglas county draft board. Edwin and other local physicians will assist in examinations, while Riling will protect registrants and government interests in deferment matters. A roster lists the county’s examiners and appeal agents by precinct, with registration duties assigned to named registrants and chiefs for 26 voting precincts.
