Washington GOP and White House Strike Major Spending Accord

White House officials and congressional bargainers reached a major spending agreement on a fiscal 2000 measure worth over 97 billion. House Republicans agreed to provide President Clinton with billions for housing environment space and other programs, including 2.5 billion for Floyd and other disasters. The deal, after two days of bargaining, calmed Clinton’s veto threats and aims for swift passage in both chambers and final signing.

United Airlines slashes agent commissions to five percent

United Airlines announces a cut in travel agent commissions from 8 percent to 5 percent with caps of 50 dollars for domestic round trips and 25 for one way. international caps are 100 dollars round trip and 50 dollars one way, aiming to save 150 million annually. Separately the U S military confirms use of computer based operations in the NATO air campaign against Yugoslavia and notes broader information operations.

Germany offers 3.3 billion to Nazi labor victims rejected

German envoy Otto Lambsdorff announced a 3.3 billion dollar fund to compensate former slave and forced laborers and other Nazi victims. Survivors called the offer inadequate and insulting while noting Germany’s budget problems. The plan includes a foundation funded by government and industry to administer payouts, with about two thirds from industry and 1.0 from government.

Diet drug maker OKs billions in payments

American Home Products agreed to pay about 3.75 billion to settle claims by thousands who say fen phen caused heart valve disease. The package includes 2.3 billion for sick former users and 1 billion for medical monitoring, with up to 429 million for plaintiffs lawyers. If approved, payments could run through 2015.

Army liaison says bugged Davidians planned deadly blaze

Retired Army colonel Rodney Rawlings told FBI investigators that bugging inside the Branch Davidian compound captured voices of David Koresh and followers as they prepared and started fires during the 1993 standoff. He said Koresh ordered fires and the recordings include Koresh saying God did not want him to die, with a lieutenant vowing Koresh would not escape.
