Heavy rainfall totaled 4.4 inches since Thursday with 2.15 inches overnight near Lone Star community. Streets flooded in southwest Lawrence as cars stalled at intersections. water reached street level on Naismith Drive and 23rd Street between Louisiana and Naismith. Basements flooded, and the Lawrence High School game versus Shawnee Mission East was postponed indefinitely. The Jamaica Home Affairs Ministry bans Stokely Carmichael from entering Jamaica along with Negro spokesmen H. Rap Brown and James Forman. No reason given. Carmichael is on a tour of Socialist countries.
Five teenagers were arrested in Atchison Kansas over the theft of 8400 blasting caps from a hardware store magazine. Some caps were found at homes and in an old quarry. About 6000 caps remain missing. One boy bought three sticks of dynamite under an assumed name, drawing sheriff attention.
Murphy, a Lawrence cabbie, shares memories from decades behind the wheel. He recalls a police follow job to Williams Town, a fan who paid half his fare with a split ten, and a knife scare with youths who earned spankings. He retired in September and ponders part time driving and fishing.

Homecoming events at Lawrence High School were postponed due to muddy fields, and actor Robert Vaughn’s KU appearance was delayed due to a broken ankle. Gasoline prices vary by station as a price war unfolds, with independents lowering to 25.9–33.9 cents and majors holding at 32.9–36.9 cents.
Members of the Baldwin Masonic Lodge and Evangeline Chapter sponsor the annual Maple Leaf auction at 6 30 p m today in front of the Masonic Hall. Job’s Daughters sell coffee cider and doughnuts during the auction.
The Topeka Coin Club sponsors a two day coin show October 14 and 15 at the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge 3839 S Topeka Blvd. About 2 million dollars worth of coins will be on display. Admission is free and open to all. Doors Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Two shootings Friday evening were reported to police and are believed to involve the same shooter. No one was injured. At Grace Baptist Church the bus window was hit by a bullet during a party at 831 Conn. St. Police found a bullet jacket and took names from attendees. Earlier, at Kroger on 9th and N.H. Sts., a window top shattered by a gunshot left a bullet on the sidewalk. Investigators pursue linked leads.
The Kansas Masonic Foundation distributes Thanksgiving Seals to about 100000 Masons to fund educational grants aid to the needy and other philanthropic pursuits. Governor Docking bought the first seals from KMF executive director James William Robbins in Topeka. A lecture series at Kansas colleges by Dr. Walter H. Judd will promote American heritage values. The EMF plans broader aid for aging and disabled regardless of Masonic membership.
Thirty five KU students who took part in a summer language institute in Paris are cited. Miss Harris is one of 37 KU candidates named by living groups to compete for the American Royal queen title with judges selecting her to represent KU on September 24. She and Melinda Cole, assistant to the KU dean of women, traveled to Kansas City for the competition. The Royal queen is chosen yearly from candidates representing Big Eight schools and land grant colleges in the Midwest.
The House Agriculture Committee delays a federal emergency food and medical aid bill for six months of study to identify how many Americans face hunger and where they live. Senate passage had supported 75 million dollars over two years, with details still under review by health and agriculture departments.
London AP correspondent Eddy Gilmore famed for wartime and Stalin era reporting, Pulitzer Prize winner, died of a heart attack at his East Grinstead home at age 60. He covered Moscow life and war, later based in London after Stalin’s death, and married dancer Tamara Chernashova despite Soviet scrutiny.
