The semi annual district meeting of the Northeast Kansas County Highway Association was held Tuesday at the 4-H Fairgrounds. Seventeen counties represented and seventy visitors toured the CFCA plant. Roundtable discussions opened with an open forum and a special business session highlighted the day.
Dr. Lynn T. White Jr of UCLA and former Mills College president will launch the 1959 60 Humanities Lecture Series at Kansas University with a talk on The Dynamism of Western Medieval Technology. He will also speak on How Do We Get Original Ideas at a convocation in University Theater. Public invited.
Mrs. ecile Schaake 68 of Route 3 died at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Survived by Albert C. Schaake husband and children Fern Carl Raymond. Ira T. Hird 74 of Vinland died at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with funeral Friday at Rumsey Funeral Home. John Horn leads services. burial Oak Hill Cemetery. Survivors include Myrtle Hird Dale Lucile Carr ie and Hird siblings and grandchildren. Mrs Ida Beurman 84 former Lawrence resident died in Kalispell Montana with burial there.
Word has been received of the death of Edwin A. Carter age 83 who lived with his son in Medford Oregon. He died this morning in Medford hospital with funeral services and burial in Medford. Survivors include son Thomas W. Carter of the home two granddaughters and two sisters Mrs Frank P. Brock Mountain Lakes New Jersey and Miss Frances Carter of 722 Ky
Herschel Buxton of El Dorado pleaded innocent to negligent homicide in the death of a Kansas Highway Patrol officer in a collision east of El Dorado. He was arraigned before District Judge W. N. Calkins and released on a $1,000 bond to appear at the November term’s opening date.
City commissioners began annexation proceedings for seven areas around Lawrence including West of South Ridge Addition and east of U S 59 and the Davis-Wiggins Addition. A preliminary hearing is set for next Tuesday with final action two weeks later. Farmers seeking City water faced policy questions on ownership, user charges, and sewage disposal.
A Hercules Powder Co official in Wilmington said the Kenvil New Jersey explosion did not seriously hamper Air Force Minuteman fuel production. He asserted Sunflower Ordnance Works remains on standby and Radford Arsenal can handle needs without expansion. He dismissed reports of a production crisis as unfounded.
Western diplomats at the United Nations debated a Soviet proposal for an international space conference. They planned close study before public comments and privately worried it might conceal a hidden motive alongside Khrushchev's disarmament push.
The next test for Lawrence High School group and other semfinalists nationwide is scheduled for December 5. Those improving their high scores on the second exam will reach finalist status. Each four year scholarship covers undergraduate years with a need based stipend averaging about $730 annually.
Lawrence High School Jayhawk Chapter of the Future Farmers of America scored high among 14 schools hosting the East Central Kansas District Leadership School. Only four earned gold emblems. Lawrence High and Seaman received two each. Dennis Mitchell was named outstanding secretary. Officers listed: Ron Brink president, John Steele vice president, Mitchell secretary, Gerald Ice treasurer, Loren Anderson reporter, Sam Pugh sentinel.
Discussions continued today at Kansas University during the National Conference on School Transportation. The final sessions drew more than 100 superintendents and industry representatives to debate bus accessories lighting rural and automotive safety and driver issues.
President Eisenhower designates Chancellor Franklin D. Murphy of Kansas University as chairman of the State Department advisory commission on educational exchange. Murphy will serve until January 1961 and attends meetings in Washington this week. The panel, which operates with travel expenses only, includes Arthur H. Edens Laird Bell and Mrs Anna L Hawks, and fills a vacancy left by R H Fitzgerald.
A five acre tract and a 22 000 square foot building at Sunflower Ordnance Works east of Lawrence have been leased to Ready Made Buildings Co of Joplin Missouri as a distribution point for pre cut lumber and hardware. The five year lease includes a 20 year renewal option and the government reserves right of immediate recapture in emergencies. Hercules Powder Co remains operating contractor at the site. Previously the government leased areas for sulphuric acid production to U S Industrial Chemical Co a National Distillers subsidiary.
The newly separated Stubblefield twins survived the five hour operation at University of Oregon Medical School Hospital in Portland. Physicians say the three month old girls Jeanett Kim and Dennett Lin are progressing as well as possible after sharing a common breastplate and a liver bridge before being separated.
Lawrence police and state and county agencies investigate a $4 500 burglary at Allen Fieldhouse over the weekend. Money from the Kansas Boston University football game receipts was taken from a locked vault and safe without damage. Police expect a quick solve, with no damage to the vault or safe.
Washington AP reports Republicans weigh a squeeze in New Hampshire as Governor Powell backs Sea Styles Bridges as a favorite son candidate. The move could narrow space for Rockefeller and Nixon in the 1960 GOP nomination race amid neutrality signals from Powell.
Three Washburn University students Dave Seager John Lang and Paul Pendergast claim they were fired from state jobs in a purge led by Ralph Ulm a North Topeka tavern operator and possible Shawnee County Democratic chairman candidate. Ulm denies involvement while Lang and Pendergast accuse Ulm backed by political pressure and threats to dismiss.
Robert Brock state chairman of the Young Democrats says he has changed his stance toward Gov. George Docking. He will back Docking and other November nominees but only if nominated. he aims to be a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Brock cites a cumulative shift and says he loves everyone and believes in applied Christianity.
An Illinois Central freight train hit a car at an unguarded city crossing killing five people on their way to work. The auto was dragged a quarter mile. Victims from Alto Pass include Barbara Brown 23 Phyllis Barbara Marks 23 Donald Leland Mas 17 Iva Buescher Myers 44 and Lolo Minton 57 the car driver.
