Navy Experts Rule Out Moon Foe as Russian Satellite

Dr J Allen Hynek in Cambridge stated radio tracking pins the object as the Russian satellite and not the moonlet. He noted the craft passed Boston area at 6 am CST on a northwest southeast path with the third rocket stage briefly mistaken for the moon. Visual sightings were reported by Dr Gordon B Little's team at the University of Alaska, while Hynek cautioned drag could separate the stage from the satellite over time.

Scientists Plot Path For A Day Ahead

U S naval scientists said they have a good fix on the Russian space satellite and can plot its path ahead from 24 hours to a week. A Navy spokesman said readings are precise to 1 100,000th of a second and the satellite appears to be in a fairly circular orbit about 400 miles high. Visual sightings put the craft at 19,000 mph as it passes over the U S six times daily on a north-south path. Russia claimed the 23 inch vehicle has yielded information of great scientific value. Experts discuss coded signals and plans to share data, while officials note the satellite may be a test vehicle as U S plans for further launches remain.
