German forces press the siege of Stalingrad while Soviet reports claim to have repelled ten assaults and regained ground in the northwest suburb. Red army reinforcements move up at night. civilians among casualties amid heavy fighting and destruction.
Allied commandos conducted a small raid on Sark island on the night of October 3 to gather information on treatment of British residents under German occupation. Ten officers and men reportedly returned with details of deportations to Germany and four prisoners killed while escaping. five captured.
The Women's Christian Temperance Union executive committee announced the 1943 convention will be held in Des Moines Iowa in September.
Japanese and American forces clash as marines contest Guadalcanal air base while Australian troops push toward Kokoda. MacArthur appears in the New Guinea battle sector, and Vern Haugland receives the silver star posthumously. Japanese radio warns of long range Fortresses and expanded U S air power.
Scrap metal piles at Lawrence city schools grow slowly as Junior Red Cross seeks more trucks and drivers. New York and Pinckney lead with largest piles while others rally to catch up. The drive includes a key campaign at Junior High with a 5000 key goal and cans in theaters and stores.

Average statewide rainfall was 4.48 inches, above normal, while average temperature fell to 66.6 degrees. An early killing frost damaged 50 to 75 percent of grain sorghums, plus soybeans and truck crops. Oswego topped the rainfall at 11.01 inches. Colby recorded 21 degrees on September 26.
Douglas county welfare staff attended a regional gathering of the American Public Welfare Association in Kansas City last Friday and Saturday. Topics included day care for war production centers, foster care for employed mothers, high school student employment, and home front security. Participants included Miss Mabel Elliott Miss Esther Twente of the KU sociology department and Mrs Emily Burney.
A conservation program reduces Kansas cream buying stations to Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays after October 19. Secretary W H Martin of the Kansas Butter Institute said the three day weekly cream purchase plan, in cooperation with the War Production Board, frees operators for other work and saves heat and light. No official word on the closing order had been received by local stations.
The Kansas Public Service company recovered 7,405 pounds of scrap metal from its basement and two shops under manager Caryl Dodds and supervisor Walt McClain. The haul includes old fittings and obsolete merchandise and will be sold to a steel mill.
Sixty one men underwent physical screening at selective service headquarters in the Community building this morning. No calls have yet been received for the last half of October. Time is short as the board needs about ten days to select draftees, and registrants must have ten days notice.
A meeting of colored Republicans will be held at party headquarters 927 Massachusetts Street tonight at 8 o clock. Speakers include Dr. J R Price of Wichita and Charles Stokes of Leavenworth.

London reports a BBC broadcast quoting the American high command urging French civilians to evacuate areas serving German war production. The alert cites railways shipyards U boat bases anti aircraft sites and factories as targeted zones amid RAF and US air raids on Osnabrück and other occupied territory.
Chancellor Deane W. Malott told the University senate that all able bodied men are bound for active service and women will enter war industries. he announced a committee to study University organization for wartime needs and noted over thirty war courses already offered with students in ROTC or reserves or deferments for professional training.

Kansas was the warm spot of this region yesterday. Goodland recorded 87 degrees and an overnight low of 46. Temperatures averaged above normal generally.
U S rent control to be invoked in the Lawrence Topeka and nearby areas as soon as possible per Max McCullough regional OPA director in Dallas. Control already active in Wichita Pittsburg Baxter Springs and Junction City Manhatan. OPA lists eight Kansas counties under the order with suggested rent rollbacks to March 1 1942.
The University of Kansas shortens its calendar to graduate on May 17 1943 and releases graduates to armed services and war industries. Armistice day holiday is dropped and Christmas vacation shortened to December 24 25 26 27. Christmas break begins December 23 at 5 30 pm and exam periods are reduced by one day per semester. The senate acted on the calendar committee’s recommendation to support continuous year around operation during wartime.
Welfare clients will receive higher fuel allowances starting October 1 for about six months. Grants vary by need with an average of a ton per person per month, mostly for coal heating. When storage space exists, grants aim to cover the entire winter coal supply, per county welfare director Mildred D. Watson.
Farmers are urged to coordinate scrap metal pickups by pooling small loads with neighbors. If a full truck is not available, combine partial loads to reduce trips to town, saving time tires and gasoline.

He is in Kansas aiding the scrap salvage campaign and his talk will cover the students part in the nations war effort. Former State Game Warden Dies Atchison Kan Oct 7 Alva Clapp 74 former state game warden died last night after a lengthy illness. In the retail hardware business here Clapp served as state game warden from 1919 to 1923 and from 1925 to 1929.
