Airman Roscoe Kent lands a Douglas transport at Newark airport after a tire blows out on takeoff from Buffalo. With 21 passengers and two crew aboard plus $150000 worth of equipment, Kent keeps the craft upright at 60 mph, while ground crews rush to the scene but are not needed. Washington October 7 The Briand Kellogg pact binds signers to renounce war as national policy and includes Japan and the United States among 58 nations. The Nine Power Pact obliges respect for China sovereignty and equal commercial opportunity, with Japan and the U.S. among signers. An older 1902 Boxer Protocol aims to keep inland Peiping sea communication open.
The Lawrence rural teachers held their first meeting at Mildred Springer home. Officers elected include Chairman Ann Williams vice-chairman Mabel Shaw secretary-treasurer Vivian Shields. Henry G. Eaton, 26, son of the late Fre Eaton a former mayor of Los Angeles, died while serving with the George Washington battalion for the loyalists in the Spanish Civil War. The death was reported by the Daily Worker and confirmed by the International Labor Defense via the state department.

The Thayer Museum hosts the first public show of the year featuring Winslow Homer wood engravings. Works span rural and Civil War scenes with early magazine illustrations from the 1860s and 1870s. The exhibit, in the south gallery, runs through mid October and includes examples of Homer’s painterly and watercolor phases.
Shelbyville Kentucky October 7. The Garr brothers Jack Roy and Dr E S Garr will go on trial Monday October 18 in Shelby circuit court on indictments charging wilful murder of Brig Gen Henry H Denhardt. The court set the date after arraignment before Circuit Judge Charles C Marshall. Jack and Roy attended the arraignment while affidavits cited Dr E S Garr illness. Attorney General Hubert Meredith who handles the commonwealth case requested relief due to Kin-solving ties to the Garrs during the Verna Garr Taylor murder case. motion denied. Indictments returned by a Shelby county grand jury yesterday.
The Topeka based notice states Douglas county has accepted 17 colored and six white boys for the October CCC enrollment. They report October 12 to Mrs. Mildred Watson at the courthouse and will be transported to camps. colored riders head to Lone Star lake site while white boys go to Valley Falls camp.
Soviet officials privately welcomed Secretary Hull's denunciation of Japan's undeclared war against China. The mood matched the farewell luncheon for U S ambassador Alexander Troyanovsky with American correspondents as he prepared to depart for Washington.
Washington Oct 7 WPA officials said Kansas work relief rolls dropped from 47 899 on Sept 28 1936 to 24 661 on Sept 18. More than 1 000 000 have been dropped from projects within the past year as relief efforts contract.
Lawrence city council on the police chief’s guidance declined a special ordinance to regulate sound tracks and radio loudspeakers. Any complaints will be handled under existing disturbance of the peace rules. The body approved alley repavings under WPA funds and numerous street, water, and facility expenditures, with debates on trash removal and other urban needs continuing.
A $7 750 check for buying a site for a Belleville Kansas post office has been issued by the accounting office. Aides of Senator George McGill have been advised and the site will be bought upon approval by the U S district attorney. Construction of the 348 000 building is slated to start about November 1.
The Douglas County Historical Society sponsors a Southeast County trip next Sunday at 2 p m starting from Nineteenth and Kentucky streets. Denver October 7 American Federation of Labor leaders urged a boycott of Japanese made goods. Matthew Woll and Charles P. Howard advocated jail terms for buyers and a convention adoption of the boycott resolution. I M Ornburn noted that purchases finance warlords.
Topeka reports continued clear brisk weather across Kansas with frost narrowly missed in western counties. Readings dipped to 36 at Goodland, ranged 40 to 45 statewide, and are expected to rise to 65 to 75 today with similar lows tonight and 70 to 75 tomorrow.
