A Kansas City proposal aims to run river barges on the Missouri between Kansas City and St Louis to ease congestion and potentially push rail rates lower. Promoter names are withheld. possible connections with New Orleans and other points could extend to St Joseph if viable.
United States senior counsel Wayne MacVeagh has arrived in Caracas to present arguments before the Venezuelan arbitration tribunal. He reports the court expressed satisfaction with the American view of the tribunal as a modern humane method to settle international differences, replacing the old forceful approach.
A hurricane sweeps Germany, uprooting trees near Charlottenburg and injuring four workmen. The Dresden baths area reports damage, while ports at Hamburg and nearby towns close to ship traffic amid the storm. Other incidents and downed structures are noted across the region.
Retired Colonel AL len S H W Mellee died at his home in Kansas City aged 84. He arrived in 1828 when the city was forest and later ran outfitting business. He aided in two of General John Fremont expeditions. Senator Long of Kansas said sickness in his family prevents attending the incoming Senate session but supports the legislation.

Mrs Ella Hanlein wife of Doc Hanlein a Santa Fe switchman was badly burned by a gasoline explosion Sunday night and died Monday morning. She borrowed gasoline in an open pitcher, a lamp ignited the vapor and caused flames. She ran upstairs where Mr Crawford tried to help and was severely burned. She leaves a husband and a twelve year old child. Her death follows a bravely endured suffering in Emporia Kansas.
The Tillman trial continued in Lexington as the first defense witness T. D. Mitchell testified about a conversation with editor Gonzales. Mitchell recounted what Gonzales allegedly told him about the defendant and warned that any improper conduct would provoke a severe reaction.
Attorney General Knox conferred with the president and agreed to appoint William B Pope as justice of the supreme court at Mexico. The government considers private hand claims and the pipe line harnesses. Pope was strongly recommended by the attorney general.
A message found in a bottle floating in the St. Lawrence River near Watertown Ontario reports the steamer Harpoon sinking with seven feet of water in the hold. It is signed Captain with illegible handwriting.
A Chicago area strike and lockout disrupts rush work as Unespress feeders face stoppages following the refusal of the Chicago hypo thetae employees association to grant the open shop policy. Large firms struggle to complete talf catalogues on time amid the workplace disruption.
John Decker a 44 year old Norwich mechanic entered the White House after doors opened. Officials thought he was a crank and he was arrested without resistance. He was handed to police. Separately William Haker a former board of trade figure and noted grain capitalist died suddenly, prominent in western markets.
The automobile run to Pittsburg started today in Weehawken with drizzle and thirty four cars contesting. The course includes Pine Hill Binghampton Bath Buffalo Eve Cleveland and Youngstown.
A large cyclone and tornadoes struck Bear Creek near Topeka and rippled through Emporia Joplin Pittsburg and other Kansas towns. Homes barns and trees were destroyed while power and telephone lines were damaged leaving several communities without light or shelter.
Flooding from the Oct 3 surge destroys Fremont bridges and Ross Bridge, with water eroding government canal banks and sweeping a channel around the lock. Government works face probable damage while one Fremont building is endangered and Union mills likely to lose power.

North of Leary street and north Lawrence suffers large underground cable burn out caused by a lightning strike to Wine Throp street. Aerial cables will replace the connection and service should be partially restored by Friday night. Repair crews arrived this morning and work proceeds at once.
A severe wind storm caused extensive damage in North Lawrence injuring a horse rider, scattering debris across the depot area. The Union Pacific passenger shed and adjacent structures suffered heavy damage including a blown tin roof, toppled sills, broken telegraph lines, and damaged trees. two young women escaped serious harm with assistance.
The couple wed today near the Stoward area with limited family present. Howard, a driver for Hortaler Co, resides in South Massena with his brother. They plan to move to Cheie Clands after October 2 and will share a small house on Coast Lee Street.
The Central Protective Association plans its third annual picnic at Driving Park tomorrow with a large turnout expected. A 1 o'clock horseback parade leads from the post and is followed by speakers including Ac Swart of Ottawa and others, plus racing events and numerous prize contests funded by local merchants.

A barn at 110 Rhode Island street burned largely last night around midnight, with hay inside and unknown ignition. Firefighters arrived late as phones failed and the blaze spread to a fence and nearby barn before being contained. The barn owner was Mrs. Davis and insurance totaled 850. The day brought no further details as Richard Cox traveled to Wichita for a Friends church conference.
Kansas City and Chicago report grain and livestock futures with wheat bids ranging from 71 to 73 for No 2 hard and 76.75 for October wheat. Corn prices steady near 38.13 to 38.34 for deferred months, oats around 36 to 37 cents, and timothy hay seen at 4.50 to 10.00 per unit. Pork futures at 10.05 for October, 12.15 for January, with lard at 87.00 for October and 96.75 for May.
