Marine Corps Maj. Clifton C. Williams Jr., 35, an astronaut trainee and expert in the craft for lunar missions, was killed when his T38 jet trainer crashed into a hilltop near the Florida-Georgia line while en route from Cape Kennedy to Houston. He was alone, reporting distress after the collision.

An heir to E I du Pont de Nemours offered a substantial reward for return of a Russian and U S coin collection valued at about 1.9 million dollars after five masked bandits disabled alarms at the du Pont seaside mansion in Miami. The raid netted 4 000 dollars in cash 50 000 dollars in jewels and coins from a safe and a vault containing roughly 7 000 coins. Du Pont and his family were bound as the thieves demanded the location of the money and safe combinations.
