Tentative plans by the Recreation Commission offer adults ceramics copper enameling plastics and jewelry making at the Community Building. Each class requires at least 12 enrollees and runs 10 weeks with a $2.50 fee. Classes meet Tuesdays at 1 p.m. starting Oct. 13. registration available at the Recreation Office or first session.
Dayton Matile, a Wellsville farmer and longtime hunter, won the right to shoot a buffalo in a Wauka Tauy Wildlife Assn drawing. The hunt takes place Oct 24 at Maxwell Game Refuge near McPherson with state officials present. He may take either the buffalo head or sole, and meat will be used in a buffalo burger celebration at Baldwin. Mike Jordan of Baldwin placed second in the drawing.
The FBI says Alma M. Stephens 40 of Abilene Kansas aided in an attempted bank robbery in Cleveland. She and accomplice William Ansley forced Herbert Fox’s family to help, then fled in a car. Ansley shot himself when police closed in. fingerprints linked Stephens to the vehicle. Stephens has prior robbery term in New York.
R. J. Brown a 195 pound All State freshman guard from Wichita leaves Kansas University and plans to enroll at Wichita University. KU coach Jack Mitchell confirms withdrawal from the Jayhawk freshman team after Brown indicated a wish to return home. Mitchell emphasizes the student’s own decision and notes it hurts to lose him from the yearlings lineup.
Memorial Hospital lists residents from Leavenworth Eudora Wellsville and Baldwin with new arrivals. Entries note babies born to Marilyn Cooper and others, including a son and a daughter, on Monday.
Gene Hopkins a Lawrence resident since 1942 and a mechanic since 1938 today announced the establishment of a furnace cleaning business in the city. The new venture is franchised by Kleen-Air Power Suction Furnace and will use the franchise method. Hopkins will handle furnace cleaning in the area but will not perform repairs or sales under the franchise. He previously served as maintenance foreman for Callery Chemical Co.
At the Douglas County Red Cross board meeting in the Community Building volunteers were urged to join several services. Training for Gray Ladies begins Oct 12 with four sessions at Plymouth Congregational Church. veterans assist two nursing homes and the Blood Center at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Jim Jacobs died when his patrol car sideswiped a grain truck during an emergency run with blood for a patient. The crash occurred near El Dorado, reversing road conditions and prompting tributes from colleagues.
The Lawrence Country Club will hold its annual stockholders meeting at 8 p.m. October 14 in the clubhouse. All members may attend, but only owners of fully paid shares may vote. Three new directors will be elected. outgoing members are Ben Barteldes, Joe Traylor and Francis Denton. Other business includes the financial statement and budget notes.
Approximately 350 northeast Kansas student editors and yearbook staffers from several districts will join the 41st annual High School Journalism Conference at Kansas University. The event, sponsored by the KSHSAA with KU Journalism School and University Extension, features sessions on editing headlines layout and budgeting with leaders from KU and area schools.
City engineer George Williams announced the first of two steps in Ninth Street resurfacing began this morning with an asphalt leveling course two inches deep from Tennessee Street to Vermont Street. If rain remains light, progress should resume on a normal schedule and continue with a second surface layer from Tennessee to New Hampshire and along Ninth to New Jersey and beyond.
More than 100 school officials and education representatives meet at Kansas University to revise minimum school bus standards. Key notes driver qualification, monitor systems, field trips, and emergency readiness, with state adoption of proposals optional.
The board approves part time duties for a university staffer, increases salary adjustments, and funds for West Junior High basketball goals and equipment. It changes Centennial and Pinckney auditorium rental, seeks federal training funds, and budgets cafeteria equipment and installer. Raises include Walter Gelbach’s $150 coaching raise and hires Shirley Gale as halftime kindergarten teacher and Norma MacCutch eon as primary teacher to replace a leave.
Two former Lawrence residents endured Colorado’s largest snowstorm last week with 31.08 inches on the ground at Fountain near Colorado Springs. Mrs. Martin letters indicate her husband serves in the Missile Command at Ft. Carson and rescue squads assisted in the storm area. The city plans a 100 mph mist insecticide spray to curb Dutch elm disease after a negative elm sample and a pending report on another sample. Jack Landreth was elected CPCU president in Kansas City, succeeding Harold Krogh. Arnold Brubeck reports a 14 pound pear weighing 544 inches long, largest he has seen.
Three Washburn University Young Democrats were dismissed from part time state jobs in Topeka. Dave Seager Arkansas City was fired for poor performance and political activity. John Lang Arkansas City and Paul Pendergast Atchison were also dismissed by State officials.
Caleb Peterson, actor and bass baritone, will perform at 8 30 p m Wednesday at St James A M E Church at 7th and Maple. The program includes Negro Spanish English Creole and Yiddish songs. On return to Hollywood after debut at Town Hall New York City he has appeared in 12 MGM films including Any Number Can Play with Clark Gable and Til the Clouds Roll By where he sang Old Man River. Reverend G H Warren leads St James church.
