Cuban political peace talks resume after leadership meeting
In Havana a key Cuban leaders conference reportedly attended by American Ambassador Sumner Welles revived hopes for peace talks. The meeting at Dr Cosme des Torriente's home followed a session with Colonel Fulgenio Batista and General Carlos Mendieta, amid failed earlier efforts and ongoing violence. Police guard foreign banks after a warned bombing plot, while the death toll from a Monday battle around the Nation hotel is cited at about 60. American groups plan meetings to consider requests from imprisoned officers wives.
