Brownback faces confirmation hearing for religious freedom envoy role
Governor Sam Brownback, longtime religious freedom advocate and former senator from Kansas, testified before the Foreign Relations Committee in Washington on his nomination as ambassador at large for International Religious Freedom in the Trump administration. Democrats pressed his record on domestic religious liberty laws, abortion, and Muslim refugee policies as Kaine and Shaheen asked about his positions. The panel did not vote and adjourned, with a final Senate decision pending and Brownback set to resign the governorship if confirmed.

Kansas county weighs sales tax for jail and crisis center
In 2015 the Kansas Legislature allowed a voter approved quarter or half percent sales tax to fund jail expansion and a crisis center but commissioners never placed it on the ballot. Analysts say even a half percent tax may not cover all debt service and operating costs while a public building commission option could issue debt but still requires voter approval for taxes.
