Thousands savor the flavor of KC barbecue world series
Kevin Cowan towed his Oklahoma Joe smoker 900 miles from Spartanburg to Kansas City for the American Royal BBQ Contest. More than 300 teams from domestic and international origins competed for over 30000 in cash prizes and top honors. Fat Boys BBQ from Temple Texas won Open Grand Champion while Kansas City's Three Little Pigs won Invitational Grand Champion. Judging rules enforce plain serving, with crews commuting long distances and spending about 1500 on trips. Cowan emphasizes barbecue as a hobby and family activity amid fierce competition and camaraderie.
