The public health department will run most shots with two vaccine types bivalent and monovalent. People with egg sensitivity or certain illnesses should consult a doctor. Side effects are mild arm soreness fever or fatigue. Vaccination timing, clinic hours and company visits are announced to ensure access for all.
Area residents expressed mixed views on swine flu shots as health officials weigh uptake. About 60 percent said they would or probably would get the vaccine while roughly 30 percent would not and the rest were undecided.
An Amtrak spokesman in Washington scotches reports of an imminent route change. The proposal, urged by Rep Martha Keys, would route the Southwest Limited through Lawrence and Topeka, adding about 45 minutes and two new stops. Decision likely months away with initial evaluation by Amtrak marketing.
Margaret L. Anderson a long time Kansas University speech and drama instructor died in Galesburg Illinois. She joined KU in 1923 rose to associate professor in 1943 and retired in 1966. The Margaret L Anderson Seminar Room at Haworth Hall honors her. Cremation in Galesburg with memorials to the KU Endowment Association.
Citizens may register to vote in the Nov 2 general election until 9 p.m. daily Monday through Friday at the county courthouse located at 11th and Massachusetts. Registration closes when the books close at 9 p.m. on Oct 12.
Dr. Frank Masters, a surgery professor and head of the plastic surgery division, was named acting chairman of the surgery department at the University of Kansas Medical Center. The appointment by Dr. Robert Kugel follows the resignation of Dr. Loren Humphrey, with a search committee to be formed in two weeks for a permanent replacement.

Richard Stitt, 24, KU graduate student, suffered second degree burns to hands neck and face from a chemical explosion in Malott Hall. He worked as a research assistant for Richard Givens EU chemistry. Stitt was moved between Watkins Memorial and Lawrence Memorial Hospitals before Bethany Medical Center treated him. A separate line notes yellow fever deaths in 1793.
