In Berlin clashes erupt as Communist and West Berlin police exchange fire across the border near Bernauerstrasse. A Red officer fires on a West Berlin policeman and a refugee dies after leaping five stories during a border chase.
United States urged the Soviet Union to avoid shooting incidents on the East West Berlin border that could threaten peace. West Berlin police reported Communist police firing on border areas, injuring a Vopo and prompting West Berlin to consider reinforcing police. Witnesses described Rock-throwing, roof skirmishes, and a tense night on Bernauerstrasse as the wall divided the city.
New York stocks closed with the 60 stock average at 2618 points, up 168 points on the day, noting broad gains across the market led by strong advances in the tech and energy sectors. The session reflected renewed investor appetite after mixed economic data and corporate earnings reports.
Robert Finch accused Knight of proposing a delegation switch to favor Nixon if Knight withdrew. Knight denied the claim and named J Howard Edgerton as Nixon’s emissary, saying Edgerton offered virtually any state job for withdrawal. The two men provided varying accounts of a Sept. 8 telephone call and sequence leading to the pit.

Cincinnati pitcher Joey Jay tossed a four hit game to outduel the New York Yankees 6-2 and knot the 1961 World Series at one game each. Back-to-back Elio Chacon and Eddie Kasko singles plus Elston Howard’s passed ball produced the deciding run in the fifth. Three Reds runs came on unearned scores off Ralph Terry and Luis Arroyo as Cincinnati built a lead with two out.
Two out in the sixth sealed the win as errors by Arroyo and Yogi Berra helped. A scoreless three innings gave way to homers from Gordon Coleman on a Frank Robinson base, and Berra followed in the bottom of the inning with a homer with Roger Maris on first after a walk. Maris, off to a poor start in the openers, went hitless again today. Mantle sat out the second straight day. The series takes a day off before Cincinnati hosts a Saturday showdown with Bill Stafford against Purkey.
Weather outlook predicts Friday to reach mid-80s with mild autumn nights in the upper 40s to low 50s. Today's temperatures run above Wednesday, which saw highs around 81 and lows near 43, while last night’s low reached 56 at 6:30 this morning.

William Binns was elected chairman of Lawrence's nine member Human Relations Committee at its organizational meeting. The group will meet the first Wednesday of each month at 8 p.m. The next meeting is Nov 1 with Mrs. Frank Burge as secretary. The panel aims to present complaints and suggestions to the city commissioners in person or in signed letters and will advise on establishing community harmony.
