President Truman orders 43 000 idle oil workers to return to plants seized by the navy. CIO leader Knight says the move does not end the strike and the union will negotiate with the government while maintaining opposition to oil companies.
Ike bound Phillips and Sinclair refinery plants in Kansas City are now under U S navy possession following telegraphic orders to managers Bogk and Sloan. Vice Admiral Moreell signed the posting notice warning unions that disruptions could violate federal law and lead to fines or imprisonment. Separate notes report the Sinclair refinery operating under union leadership in Coffeyville and an Oil Workers strike vote planned at Skelly Oil in El Dorado. Crosby discharged from hospital and plans ranch return after a four day rest period.
A 5.30,000,000 tax-cut bill moves to the House after Ways and Means approval trimming rates for individuals and corporations, with broad relief and offsetting changes. Meanwhile the University of Kansas offers a November twelve-week term for veterans and civilians, enabling up to 12 credit hours and continuing into spring. about 300 veterans are already enrolled.
Topeka reports Kansas residents may obtain shotgun shells by petitioning lawmakers. A letter writing campaign led by Thomas Marmion of Paul Minn prompted extra supplies, with Marmion noting Texas dealers seeing rising shipments and other states observing similar trends. The earliest expected rally point for shell sales was said to be early in the period.
The report lists passengers expected aboard the S S LaCrosse and the S S Gian, with names including J Roper and John H Metaker of Lawrence. Also noted is Pfc Arthur Giley of Sunflower and Sgt High Simon of Oskaloosa among the expected travelers from Europe.
Two Kansas City Kansas men Everett Jenkins 29 and James Oscar Crockett 25 linked to a Safeway cash register robbery that yielded 55 dollars were released to Kansas City officers by Chief C A Bliesner y. Jenkins was captured after a chase, Crockett was arrested in Kansas City and sent back for prosecution. Walter Kirby Jr with similar charges remains at large locally.
A large group of World War II veterans attended the Dorsey Liberty Post No. 14 meeting. Jack Miller announced a post membership of 111, and Irwin Cowger spoke on national Legion work, noting sponsorship of over 3,000 Boy Scout troops and the junior baseball program as a delinquency deterrent, with Prof. Allen Crafton of KU entertaining with World War I songs.
Emergency report says Nancy Oyler daughter of Lt and Mrs Robert Oyler of 839 Missouri street was treated at Memorial hospital last night for a gash over one eye. No stitches were taken. She fell while running around a coffee table and struck her forehead on the corner near her glasses.
New York telephonists walked off at 2 PM as part of a four hour national stoppage affecting about 8 000 workers in New York and 3 000 in Missouri. Supervisors tried to keep emergency lines open while unions protest NLRB rulings and a dissolution threat. Deputies patrolled banks and towns to prevent disruptions during the protest.
The old village whistle was restored yesterday morning after Jayhawker students left their 8 30 classes. A goldtimer replaced the loud three tone call once voiced by Capt. Robert A. Haggard a former student who brought the whistle back from Lake Horne to the campus.
Topeka Oct 5 The Kansas division of vocational rehabilitation reports 465 cases last year showing handicapped persons placed in suitable jobs. Director H Meyanti notes formerly unemployed individuals earned an annual income totaling in the hundreds of thousands, Dawdy declared.
Burt Howell of Kansas City, Ban., shows the national champion coyote hound at Osage Hills Wolf Hunters Association annual meeting in Pawhask e Oklahoma. The bench show was part of a four day coyote hunt attended by about 850 sportsmen from across the nation.
Missouri and Kansas department stores reported a 14 percent rise in dollar sales in the past week per the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. St Joseph Missouri led with 25 percent, Kansas City 18 percent, while Wichita lagged. Joplin Nevada and Carthage posted a 17 percent year over year gain.
KU housing chief Misa Miller credited Lawrence volunteers for housing 40 new dorm spaces and private homes for 1,? to 16 women while the university leased the Women's City Club and bought 1420 Ohio for a dorm.Enrollment rose to 1,687 women from 1,413, a 20 percent jump.

Jockey Dempsey, a renowned professional rider, won the five gaited class for stallions and geldings aboard Skyrocket owned by Mr and Mrs Lacy Beck of Smithfield Missouri, ending a Nebraska wing challenge.

Ruth Massett of Leavenworth was taken to Bethany Hospital in Kansas City after a collision between a Johnson County highway maintenance truck driven by Frank Foster of Bonner Springs and a sedan driven by Anthony F Ulrich of Leavenworth. Buck Timberg sustained a head injury. both vehicles were badly damaged.

Ralph Graber principal of Lib Memorial high asks residents to leave cars at home for the football game between Lawrence and Ward high. Sheriff’s deputies checked Haskell field lot and found it impassable for cars, prompting the parking ban.
Mrs. Helen Moraghan a 34 year old Cleveland woman died after attempting to rescue a photograph of her soldier husband from a burning home. Firemen found her unconscious and nearly suffocated by smoke in the hallway and she died last night. Battalion Chief Frank McNea said she was overcome while trying to save the picture of Richard F. Moraghan.
Local Southwestern Telephone Workers Union members shut down service from 1 to 5 PM in a non strike protest against an NLRB ruling. Supervisors handled emergencies at the Lawrence plant while most operators remained off duty. The front office stayed open for bill payments as the public cooperated to limit nonemergency calls.
The district forecast indicates rain in Missouri and Kansas on Saturday with light to moderate precipitation overall. Temperatures rise gradually toward the middle and end of the period, averaging about five degrees above normal.
